BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand and China signed a rail construction, train procurement, and personnel training contract for a Bangkok - Nakhon Ratchasima High Speed Rail service on the northeastern line. The Prime Minister said the project will help promote the economy, improve connectivity, and enhance person-to-person relations.

Prime Minister and Minister of Defence Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha presided over a signing ceremony of Contract No. 2.3 for Phase 1 of the northeastern High Speed Rail project between Bangkok and Nakhon Ratchasima, constructed with the cooperation of the Thai government and the Chinese government.

This contract covers rail construction, electrical systems and machinery, train procurement, and training of personnel.

The Government Spokesman Anucha Burapachaisri cited the Prime Minister who said the government places high priority on this project, which will serve as a strategic route enhancing the country’s competitiveness while driving development in the country and the region, especially key cities along the railway.

He said the project will help strengthen ties between Thailand and China, reflecting a mutual commitment to infrastructure development to help promote economic prosperity, connectivity, and relations between the people of Thailand and China.

The Prime Minister said cooperation in this project will provide an opportunity for the exchange of technological knowhow, allowing Thailand to use the knowledge gained to further benefit the people, the country, and the region.

Yesterday, Thailand signs an agreement with the US to finance Thai infrastructure projects. Today, Thailand signs an agreement to build a Chinese railroad to increase ties between Thailand and China. It is not time for the US to finance some Chinese built project for Thailand. It is time for the US to downgrade its diplomatic presence in Thailand and revoke any defense treaties between the two countries.

I could not think of 2 worse governments to build a reliable high-speed rail system.

Rumours are, the Thai Military has plans to convert the trains to Submarines.

Well that's easy, just build a bridge and wait for the train to derail. Shouldn't take too long.

Uh...wait a second. It ist just 260km Bangkok-Korat! Another 1200km to build before reaching the chinese border. And: Have you seen the actual meter-gauge-trains crawling while crossing the Mithrapap-Bridge over the Mekong in NongKhai Province? I think a high-speed project will need lots of new tunnels and bridges all the way from Isan to Lao and to Yunnan.
This is like building a speed track between Naples and Rome and saying it would strengthen ties in Europe or reflecting mutual commitment between Sweden an Italy.

Thailand and China ink the annexation of Thailand by mother country China.

The people of Thailand will have to pay back to China all the bribes and watches, which were awarded by China to the Thai dinosaurs for inking the contract, with the overpriced interest rates if the contract. Thailand and its people are Chinese vassals now. Smart move of China to increase its sphere of influence.

What, China the country which has the most extensive and reliable high speed network in the world?  36,000 kms of high speed rail which is more than two thirds of the world's total network.

Or are you just a usual TVF "made in China must be bad" basher?

Check how much of it is making any profit.  Some past bosses imprisoned.

USA showing any interest in Thailand maybe connected with Taiwan future issues.  Good to be in the middle with both sides throwing money and kisses  Thailand's way?

I don't care who makes it, let them run that ish from Swampy to Hua Hin and I'm riding it. Anything beats three nail-biting hours on Phetchakrashem Road.

Thanks for sharing. I had no idea. Impressive how China is pushing infrastructure-developement in SEA. I am still dreaming of travelling from germany to Thailand by train. Apparently there are 20 departures per week from Duisburg to Chongquing, but only cargo, no passenger line yet...

you can still take the trans-siberian to vladivostok until the chinese build the passenger line.  from there it's a couple hours to the border where you can access the chinese high speed rail system.

don't know yet if they'll be expanding the obsolete high-speed rail or will be building their new 600 kmh maglev train.

as for us currently stranded in china, given how slowly the borders are opening, we'll prolly have a chance to ride the kunming-bangkok line next december.

For reference:-

In years to come, the ultimate aim of the Chinese is to build and operate these HST routes linking Kunming (Yunnan Province) with Singapore:-

how many public transportation systems make a profit or incur a loss?  aren't many national systems subsidized in order to promote the economy and provide social benefit?  break-even would be great but not necessary with government support.

what was the final decision on the interest charged on the chinese loan package?  thailand should have been able to drive a hard bargain.....china needs this for the belt and road, thailand does not.

thailand is already building the medium-speed passenger and freight line bangkok to korat within the same ROW.  there is no need for high-speed rail as it will probably be cheaper to fly.  i don't expect many of the regular folks will pay 500 baht for a ticket when a bus will do the job for 1/3.

Signing the deal? I had thought that construction was already well under way!

The way things are going a high speed ferry service might be more appropriate.

'ink'?   Is this the new buzz word for signing or just bad english?

Obvious your not very well educated. But well informed media investigation in Australia and the US post there findings online..The only thing they would find hiliarious is your reaction. As l said uneducated.

Inking the deal is the fourth stage in the lead up to actually getting anything done. The first stage was to produce a prolific number of artists impressions for media releases. The second was to have a ground breaking ceremony which they did in December 2017 complete with politicians, VIPs and government fat cats. Next was setting the fare prices and that's been done. Finished now are the formalities of contract signing and traditional handing over of "expenses". Feasibility studies and environmental impact statements will not be required. So straight to the next stage which will be land acquisition. The SRT are not very good at that as Hopewell found out. Interesting times ahead. BTW, the SRT announced a few weeks back that the Inter airport HS train project had stalled for "budget" reasons.
