Report Manila Robbery Highlights Need for Street-Level Police Presence
Photo courtesy of Manila Bulletin The recent robbery of a college student in Manila's Binondo district has spotlighted the importance of visible street-level policing. The incident occurred on Monday night when the 20-year-old was accosted by two armed, motorcycle-riding robbers. Stripped of his phone and unable to call for help, the student fortunately encountered a passing Tactical Motorcycle Reaction Unit (TMRU) patrol. Acting promptly on the victim's detailed description, the officers soon caught up with the suspects. A brief exchange of gunfire ensued when one of the robbers opened fire on the pursuing police. Officers returned fire, injuring one suspect in the leg, who was subsequently arrested after being abandoned by his accomplice. National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO) Major General Anthony A. Aberin emphasised that this response underscores the effectiveness of increased police deployments during late-night hours. “The case highlights our strengthened street presence and rapid deployment capabilities under our intensified anti-criminality drive,” Aberin stated. The arrested suspect, hospitalised for his injury, was found in possession of a .38 revolver. He now faces charges under Republic Act 10591 (Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act) and Robbery with Violence and Intimidation under the Revised Penal Code. Meanwhile, a follow-up operation is underway to apprehend his accomplice, who absconded with the victim's phone and a bag containing roughly 3,500 Thai Baht. This operation has been hailed as a testament to NCRPO's commitment to providing swift and effective police services. "It's crucial for public trust and safety to see this kind of responsive action on the streets of Metro Manila," Aberin noted. General Nicolas Torre III previously advised the public to dial 911 for swift police assistance. However, incidents such as this underscore the vital role of on-the-ground police presence, especially when victims are unable to make emergency calls. The operation exemplifies NCRPO's broader strategy to enhance security and ensure rapid responses to criminal incidents, ultimately working to foster a safer environment for Manila's residents and visitors alike.
