PCD uses satellite imagery to predict air pollution

 

 

BANGKOK (NNT) - Despite overcast skies over Bangkok in recent days, the Pollution Control Department reports that the air quality in the capital is still good, with high airborne particle concentrations in heavy traffic areas. The department revealed that it is implementing measures to curb the increasing trend of airborne dust, with satellite imagery used to forecast pollution build-up.

 

The Pollution Control Department (PCD) Director General Attapon Charoenchansa said Thailand is entering the winter season, which lasts from November to January, during which the lower temperature and other climate conditions make it difficult for airborne particles to disperse, including PM2.5 and PM10.

 

This build-up of air pollution has been observed in Bangkok, as well as in 17 provinces in the northern region. The PCD chief said the department has put this issue on the national agenda and drafted a response plan, to be implemented by many organizations.

 

The PCD’s suggestions have led to the restriction of large and diesel engine vehicles from operating in Bangkok, campaigns encouraging the general public to make changes to protect themselves from hazardous air pollutants and discussions with the transportation and tourism industries to help reduce air pollution.

 

For provinces in the northern region, the government has developed an application to help farmers schedule crop stubble burning times, to help reduce the concentration of particles emissions from the fires. This scheduling is done along with combustibles management, to reduce the volume of combustibles in areas prone to fire.

guarantee that .001 per cent will comply

I predict there will be air pollution wherever there is a concentration of combustion engine vehicles and wherever farmers conduct mass burn offs!...............................I may be wrong. ???? You don't need a weatherman to tell which way the wind blows! BD.

A schedule for burning times ?    ridiculous   stop the burning that's what's needed  not a bloody schedule !!!

if farmers need  a workforce and machinery then the "government"   can help with that    plenty of unemployed people  due to the WuFlu  Covidiocy   let alone the  thousands of conscripted  military and associated equipment sitting idle.

The Government allows farmers to burn sugar cane even though an alternative method of harvesting is available.  Even Brazil has banned the burning of sugar cane.  A lot easier to ban the processing of burnt sugar cane.  No need to catch the farmer burning the sugar cane, just send a man to the factory and fine the farmer and sugar cane factory.  The solution to part of the problem is so simple, maybe too simple for the government.

The PCD uses a multi-million Thai Baht satellite to predict air pollution.
I use a free calendar that I get every year from my bank to predict air pollution. 

I think the PCD is wasting a ton of money that probably should be spend mitigating the cause of air pollution.

Same up North.  Ag corporations give farmers the seeds and chemicals to plant corn on deforested mountains in Lanna.  Then after harvest the farmers just burn it all down. 

Bigger profits for the corporations; choking PM 2.5 for everyone who lives in Northern Thailand.

The government wrings in hands and says it can't do anything.  Nonsense.  They choose not to. 
Ban the practice. But - corporations and governments working together to increase corporate profits?  Mussolini would have appreciated the economic model used here in Thailand for sugar cane and corn production. 

That's exactly what I was waiting for. A prediction when I will be choking on the smoke. What a relieve.
