Because he is probably living in a state that is within the embassies area of jurisdiction.

But it doesn't make much sense since there are plenty of direct flights out of major US cities into the asian transfer hubs.

e.g. if he lives in the eastern part and deals with the embassy in DC.

Why would he waste money, time and be subject to extra hassle by flying domestically to LAX first?

There are plenty of direct flights out of JFK, Chicago, Dallas etc straight into the asian hubs.

He might have his unique reasons and that's the reason for my question.

If you look at the map the blue states go as far west as Texas. I an tell you that from Texas the airport in LA is a common airport for flights to Asia. Same for San Francisco and Seattle.
