Bangkok metered taxis can now charge special fees for luggage

The Transport Ministry has announced that as of Tuesday, Bangkok metered taxis will be allowed to charge passengers handling fees for large luggage items, but not for equipment such as wheelchairs or walking sticks.

 

Under the new regulations, taxis will be allowed to charge luggage handling fees as follows:

 

• Bt20 for every bag that exceed 26 inches in width, height or length.

 

• Bt20 for every additional item of luggage after the first two.

 

• No more than Bt100 per piece for sports equipment like golf bags, bicycles, surfboards or musical instruments that are 50 inches or more in size.

 

• No more than Bt100 for equipment, tools or appliances that are 50 inches or more in size.

 

The cabbie is required to inform the passenger in advance about the extra handling fees.

 

No charges will be allowed for carry-on baggage such as handbag, computer bag, backpack or personal belongings carried by the passenger.

Does that mean the driver will load the bags into the trunk and any compensations if bag damaged?

But... does this mean that the cabbie is required, by regulations, to help get the luggage  (apart from cabin luggage) in and out of the cab?

will there be a price list with reference to the sizes? just like the price list along with the distance and waiting time which is rarely displayed on taxis.

Solution - Raise the price.

Reminder to self: Take measuring tape along on next trip, in case I meet a cabbie who insists my 26-cm pouch is more than 26 inches.

This is definitely the best time to be implementing measures to make it more time consuming and expensive for tourists to come to Thailand. Such foresight. Much optimism.

Next they will be weighing each passenger.  

I understand why aircraft charge for excess baggage etc where weight equals fuel use and take off performance.  I am no car engineer but I do not believe that weight is a consideration with taxis otherwise we would be charged an excess for each additional passenger.

Thailand wants to be the "HUB" of tourism red tape!

Next they'll be crying that Grab is stealing their passengers, of course.

Yes, very strange!

No different to when we were in Paris and the taxi driver charged us 10 Euro to put our 2 suitcases into the boot. That was on top of a 50 Euro fare to the airport from our hotel. Bangkok taxis are still some of the cheapest in the world.

Give 'em an inch, and they'll think they're a ruler.

You know these rulers.  Give them a centimeter and they'll take an inch.  Need to have someone watch out for this stuff.

 

Still very cheap but adding just more confusing for tourists arrived in Thailand.

Hong Kong charges HK$ per item that needs to go in the boot. Size is likely in inches as that’s how airlines rate suitcases sizes. 

So if we put them in ourselves then there is no extra charge?

Why this outcry? Many places in Europe apply the same rules when it comes to handling luggage. 

Does that include the taxis that have a gas tank in the boot. Then your suitcase is half hanging out and secured with an old bungee cord, and getting pelted with rain...............

Never used taxi in Thailand since Grab was introduced. Smelly, obnoxious taxi drivers treating you like a <deleted>.... no thank you

Seems very fair. Cabbies have been stuck at the same rate for a very long time. In places like Amsterdam they really charge you up the butt for luggage. So this seems fine.

Ya, these intellectual giants just made Grab cars for my weekly golf trips with my golf bag and carry bag the preferred transport option.

 

No more dirty and unroadworthy taxis.

 

Same airport taxi charges they previously banged on tourists.

Because the airline industry still uses inches when measuring the size of bags, even though they use kilograms for weight.......maybe

I gladly pay extra for Grab, even give tips sometimes. I would pay for taxi too a fair fee if they did not act like rip off artists. Easy to choose.
