UK's Sunak says he hopes for a Brexit deal but not at any price

LONDON (Reuters) - British finance minister Rishi Sunak has said there is genuine progress in Brexit talks with the European Union, but that it would be better to walk away from a bad trade deal than tie Britain's hands in the future.

 

Sunak, one of the few members of Prime Minister Boris Johnson's senior ministerial team to have emerged from the COVID pandemic with an enhanced reputation, was thought to be one of the leading voices in the cabinet who wanted a free trade deal with the EU.

 

He told the Sunday Times that he hoped Britain and the European Union would secure an agreement.

 

"Every day I am reviewing bits of text, so there is genuine progress," he said. "Certainly, it would be preferable to have a deal."

 

But he added: "The major impact on our economy is the coronavirus. It's absolutely not (a question of doing) a deal at any price.

 

"If we don't get a deal, why is that? It is because they are refusing to compromise on what are some completely reasonable and very transparent principles that we've laid out from the beginning. We are not asking for ... super-special treatment."

 

The two sides have been locked in talks for months and, while officials say they have made progress in the last few days, a substantial amount still needs to be done for an agreement to be in place and ratified by the year-end deadline.

 

Sunak gave the interview ahead of a spending review on Wednesday when he will set out the government's spending over the next year, after COVID-19 blew a 200 billion pound ($266 billion) hole in Britain's finances.

 

He said he hoped that, by next spring, he would be able to start thinking beyond the current need to support the economy and jobs, and considering how he could return the public finances to a sustainable level.

Well you see UK would have been gone long ago but the EU keeps granting extensions in attempt to disguise the fact they are a 'one trick horse', and, further, if a deal is agreed, one country decides to veto, they are an embarrassing 'no trick ass'

Well EU would wouldn't they just to delay exit they don't want it looking easy to other members who will be wanting out, look back at when remainer TM was in charge there is where all problems began.

I was replying to @473geo who - with a clever turn of phrase - inferred without explicitly stating,  that the EU had granted extensions to Article 50 without prompting: I pointed out the actuality was that the UK had asked for these extensions.

 

I'd like to see you post something that adds to the debate, rather than inane, simplistic nonsense: I'd also like to play professional football. In reality, neither of these two desires seem remotely likely to occur.

So the EU should have turned round and effectively said: "You know what UK, we know that you've asked for an extension but, we know best so, no extension"? I can only imagine what the reaction from Brexiters on here would have been like.

 

Your comment is just yet another example of Brexiters having little idea of what they actually want, and even less idea of how to get there. The only option then is to abdicate accountability and responsibility for the whole sorry mess, and blame Remainers for events that they didn't want to occur in the first place.

When you want to do business in Thailand / UK / EU / any country, you have to do that in accordance with the law of that country, and in case of a dispute, go top the courts of that country.

When you sell rights in your county('s waters, like fishing rights, 80% of the Welsch to Spanish fisherman), then you stick to that.

Only THAT is what Boris c.s. does not want.

But.. why to negotiate with a government and parliament, who even do not honour their signature under a treaty for 1 year ?

Are you sure about that were those fishing contracts sold privately between parties if that is the fact then its a disgrace if the UK wants to change it. f it was a goverment to goverment deal its something different. 

 

But if an UK fisherman got money for selling his rights to an Spanish or Dutch one then that should not be changed. You cant cancel a deal like that without compensation. 

 

So I am not sure that that is the case I mean the Brexiteers have shown how untrustworthy they are with canceling a treaty they themselves negotiated but this would be going even further if its true. It would be criminal. Once sold or rented out then you need to keep that no way the  government can undo that. Unless they were government to government agreements.
