U.S. Supreme Court swiftly ends Trump-backed Texas bid to upend election results

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -The U.S. Supreme Court on Friday rejected a long-shot lawsuit filed by Texas and backed by President Donald Trump seeking to throw out voting results in four states, dealing him a crushing setback in his quest to undo his election loss to President-elect Joe Biden.

The justices in a brief order said Texas did not have legal standing to bring the case against Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin.

The case was filed on Tuesday by the Republican attorney general of Texas, a Trump ally. The Republican president on Wednesday filed a motion to intervene and become a plaintiff.

The Supreme Court’s 6-3 conservative majority includes three justices appointed by Trump and none of them commented in the unsigned order. Before the Nov. 3 election, Trump said he expected its outcome to be decided by the Supreme Court.

“Texas has not demonstrated a judicially cognizable interest in the manner in which another state conducts its elections,” the court’s order said.

Two of the court’s conservatives, Justice Samuel Alito and Justice Clarence Thomas, said they would have allowed Texas to sue but would not have blocked the four states from finalizing their election results.

There was no immediate response from the White House. A Biden spokesman said it was “no surprise” the high court rejected “baseless attempts” to deny Trump lost the election.

“Our nation’s highest court saw through this seditious abuse of our electoral process,” Pennsylvania Attorney General Josh Shapiro, a Democrat, said on Twitter.

The four states in a filing with the court on Thursday asked the justices to reject the lawsuit, which they said had no factual or legal grounds.

Trump’s campaign and his allies already had lost in numerous lawsuits in state and federal courts challenging the election results. Trump has falsely claimed he won the election and has made baseless allegations of widespread voting fraud and a system “rigged” against him. State election officials have said they have found no evidence of such fraud. Lawyers for Trump and his allies have failed to present evidence in court of the type of fraud he has alleged.

Texas had asked the justices to throw out the election results in the four states. Biden won all four states. Trump had won them in the 2016 election.

Trump and many of his fellow Republicans have made unfounded claims that the expansion of mail-in voting during the coronavirus pandemic led to Biden fraudulently winning in election battleground states. Democrats and other critics have accused Trump of seeking to shatter public belief in the integrity of U.S. elections and sabotage American democracy by trying to subvert the will of the voters.

Trump has refused to concede the election and many Republicans have not acknowledged Biden as president-elect. Biden is due to take office on Jan. 20.

The Texas lawsuit argued that changes made by the four states to voting procedures amid the coronavirus pandemic to expand mail-in voting were unlawful. Texas asked the Supreme Court to immediately block the four states from using the voting results to appoint presidential electors to the Electoral College, which is scheduled to formally pick the winner on Monday.

Anyone surprised?  I was just waiting for the manner in which the Supreme Court would reject this case.  Trump is just adding to his legacy.  He's cemented his place as the most prolific liar in the history of the Presidency.  Now he's also the most prolific loser of court cases in the history of the Presidency.  MAGA!

Honestly, they should request any further claim to be backed up by at least 100 Mill. USD cash collateral from now on.

Obstruction of justice by littering the courts.

Thanks for this link and the commendation.

As I said before: Trump and his kin are not speaking for conservatives. There are honest and good man (slightly) right leaning (from the middle) who deserve to be heard and who contribute.

It was the biggest mistakes of the Republican's ever to allow this cancer to grow into their ranks. They should have been warned. In the 1930th German Aristocrates and Industrial Tycoons tried to control Hitler and his kin as an "attack dog" against the Communist streams. We know how they failed and studied it for almost a century.

If the Trump legal team were a British football side, they would be relegated

It can only be hoped that the  run off elections go the  Democrat's way. If not the frenzied spitefulness embedded in the core of the GOP will inhibit not only some rational way forward but further incite  greater social division .

Either way Trump is likely to be well involved in defending his multiple  State law infractions even if he were to attempt a self pardon .

I see your allusion here but as a Scotsman, it does feel really good to finally have something lamentably more woeful than the Scottish national football team.

It's interesting to note the Supreme Court is 6-3 in Trump's favor, and only two judges on the bench said they'd let Texas sue, but would not stop the defendant states from certifying the election results. 7 out of the 9 judges threw the case out summarily.

Trump lost again - badly.

Don't be too happy. The resistance begins January 21.

It's a pity the SCOTUS didn't allow it as if the election was won fair and square Biden would still be POTUS come Jan 20, but the matter would be settled. Just refusing to take the case means that the accusation of fraud will not be going away any time soon. 70 million angry Americans is not a good way to start a term.

However, IMO there are around 70 million Americans that will feel aggrieved, and do everything they can to bring Biden down.

Expect the same sort of <deleted> as Trump got the past 4 years, and if the GOP wins a majority in the house come 2022, expect some large payback. If the GOP still hold the senate they might even impeach and convict Biden.

Regardless, the investigation into Hunter Biden will IMO hurt Joe Biden, and the Chinese spy sleeping with a Democrat politician should be satisfyingly embarrassing to Pelosi, who is downplaying it. I'm sure there are a lot of embarrassing things to come out about Democrats, so I'm expecting US politics to be entertaining for some time to come.

So the “big one” ended as a big humiliation. No justice publicly dissented even Trump’s three Supreme Court appointees. His dream of vindication at the Supreme Court which has a 6-3 conservative majority courtesy of Trump’s rushed confirmation process to pack the court to his favour to resolve any election disputes. His call for “great wisdom and courage” to the top court resonated well with the judges who pulled the plug on him deservingly. Karma is its best.

Well, IMO you are correct that if the senate remains GOP majority, Biden is in for a hard time ????.

Really is quite sad!

Not really!  ????

You may be right about unrest continuing, Biden has a mammoth job to do healing America.

"If the election was won fair and square"? It was, it's only Trump's false claims saying otherwise.

If I remember correctly, any effort to impeach Biden has to go through Congress first, where the Democrats are in the majority.

Politicians will always do embarrassing things, with the exception of Trump. He is oblivious to that emotion. Sociopaths reject it as a weakness.

"Entertaining"? Sounds to me you are a devotee of schadenfreude.

If this guy Trump would have invest half of the tensity and determination he spent to save his forgone concluded presidency in trying to beat this Covid business, he would have been remembered fondly as the president who at least tried and not just the one who tried to save his backside...

Frivolous cases get short shrift in pretty much ANY American court of law.

Now if someone wants to wait until he's simply citizen Trump and sue him for trying to subvert the American election process, I will buy popcorn for that one.

IMO even if that number is inflated, it has already started to drop as reality bites. Nobody, especially Americans, really wants to be associated with a loser, do they?

Like in tit-for-tat politics? I really wonder what they could possibly impeach him on, let alone convict.
