I'm in Thailand, and I wish to get married to a Thai woman.

My current visa ends in the second week of March.

When do you recommend I get married?

And when do I need to establish a Thai bank account (for proof of required 400K)  ?

There's village married where you go through a structured but unofficial ceremony which is totally accepted but no official documents, and then there is the official where you go to the Ampere and register (no ceremony necessary) the marriage and get a Marriage Certificate each.

Which route are you going, for it to be acceptable outside Thailand you need the 2nd.

If you are going for a married extension from Immigration you will need the official documents from the Ampere, how long the 400k needs to be in the bank depends on what visa/extension you are on now. Ubonjoe is probably the best to advise on that part.

To be acceptable inside Thailand you also need number 2.

Accepted by the wife's family, for every other matter you would count as "single"

If you get married at Amphur before the current visa (no idea what that is as you don't say) expires then you can get a 60 day extension based on marriage to get extra time and then a Non O for 90 days so you'll have time for requisite 60 days in bank of 400K prior applying the one year extension.

I'm on ED visa right now.  It expires second week in March.

Do I need to have funds in the bank before I apply for 60-day extension?

Are you a 90 day entry from a non-ed visa or a extension of stay based upon attending school?

The 400k baht has to be in the bank for 2 months on the day you apply.

There is no financial requirement for the 60 day extension. But you will need the 400k baht in the bank before you apply for it to meet the 2 month requirement before it ends.

If you want a Non O visa based on marriage it has to be official marriage.. I came in on a tourist visa back in March.. we got married.. officially.. by the time all the papers and everything were in order it took about 3 months + .. eligibility to get married from your embassy.. translation to Thai.. money in the bank for 2 months.. a few visits to you immigration office.. a home visit from them.. a couple of visits to your Ampere.. it isn't quick.. give yourself lots of time.. less stress..

If you are 100% committed to marriage, and want to stay in Thailand, do it now. As noted above there are likely to be delays and complications (particularly if you need an affirmation from your embassy that you are single).

Your girlfriend's family might also insist on the ceremony. While it can be organised quickly (assuming you have the money) it will have to be on an auspicious day and there might be some delays.

Best to go with your girlfriend to your local Amphur now and get the paperwork started. It could take 4 weeks to gather everything you need to get legally married.
