Opposition to submit no-confidence motion

 

   

BANGKOK (NNT) - Opposition parties plan to submit a no-confidence motion against the government this month, with a request for a seven-day session. The opposition is targeting Prime Minister and Defense Minister, Gen. Prayut Chan-o-cha, and several ministers with corruption and negligence allegations as well as criticism of the government’s handling of the COVID-19 situation. However, the government is not concerned about the opposition and still has confidence in its performance and the people’s support.

 

The Secretary-General of the opposition Pheu Thai Party, Prasert Jantararuangtong, has confirmed that the no-confidence motion will be submitted to the Speaker of the House of Representatives in the last week of this month, if there is a House meeting on January 27.

 

The opposition wants legislators to have sufficient time to debate, after the previous session lasted only three days. This year, opposition members have to be prepared to present information and keep the government in check. The opposition will request a seven-day session, but the issue will be discussed with the House Speaker again.

 

The censure debate will target the Prime Minister and a number of ministers, as information is being collected by the opposition parties. The debate will still focus on corruption and negligence of duty allegations, which have caused damage to the country.

 

Nonetheless, the government is not concerned about its handling of the COVID-19 situation.

 

Speaking of the government’s popularity, the Vice Minister of the Prime Minister’s Office, Suporn Atthawong, said the people are pleased with the government, and they would like to thank the Prime Minister and the government for acquiring a COVID-19 vaccine, which will be available to the public within two months.

 

Every Thai will get the vaccine, and this reflects the Prime Minister’s understanding that people’s lives are of the utmost importance. The government official praised the Prime Minister as the best leader to address the COVID-19 crisis and is recognized worldwide.

 

The Secretary to the Prime Minister’s Office, Dr. Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana, said today that the government has been trying its best to limit the second outbreak of COVID-19. The majority of the people are confident that the Prime Minister is capable of keeping the situation under control, as shown in the past.

 

The people are very satisfied with the setting up of a panel to probe gambling dens nationwide, as they are one of the sources of recent COVID-19 infections, and to prosecute all those involved.

 

The people are feeling reassured, after the government approved a budget to procure 35 million doses of COVID-19 vaccine, which can help protect half of the Thai population. Dr. Thanakorn called on the opposition to understand the government’s work and show sympathy. The opposition should not constantly relay criticisms, as the people are tired of them.

 

Meanwhile, the House meeting has been postponed by at least two weeks due to the COVID-19 crisis. The political sector has expressed concern about the delay in the government’s work, particularly the deliberation of important bills and constitutional amendments.

 

Deputy Prime Minister, Prof. Dr. Wissanu Krea-ngam, said today the current situation may affect the deliberation of many important bills, including charter amendments, a national referendum bill and the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) draft law and other draft laws related to illegal drugs and abortion, which is an urgent matter.

 

The Constitutional Court ruled that the draft law has to be enforced by February 12 this year, but it has to be presented to the House and the Senate for consideration.

 

Concerning the constitutional amendment and the national referendum bill, the government can convene an extraordinary session due to the delay.

Most unpopular government I can remember in 31 years here with the possible exception of Gen. Suchinda in '92 but then there was someone who could step in and mediate, which isn't the case now.
