BANGKOK (NNT) - A land management committee has decided that overlapping land in Sa Kaeo and Nakhon Panom should be permanently separated from forest land for the benefit of the public.

Deputy Prime Minister Gen Prawit Wongsuwan chaired a meeting of the committee on policies, guidelines and measures for the management of land and land resources, which saw fit to appoint Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives Thamanat Prompow chair of the working group to enact, monitor and propel its policies. The meeting resulted in a decision to separate 10,805 rai of land in the area of Plai Khlong Huay Krai-Phra Satueng Forest in Sa Kaeo and 1,648 rai of land in the area of Dong Seka Forest in Nakhon Panom from forest land for use by the state. The Land Development Department was similarly issued with an order to survey and delineate 6.3 million rai of land in forest reserves for use by the nation’s impoverished.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and the Environment was told to coordinate with the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives and related units, to further resolve issues of overlapping land rights so that citizens can make full use of such land.

Hopefully a State enterprise does not decide to build on the land and it goes to the less fortunate to start a home and a new small farm for subsistence living.

I would love for you to be correct. However.....

A committee chaired by Prawit decided on some issue that shall benefit the public. Enforced by Thamanat Prompow.

"Irony" has just received a new dimension.

It may sound good in theory to most people. In practice consider there will be another 6.3 million fires every year. And when looking around we can also see the impoverished can't seem to find a way to make a decent living when given a tiny parcel of land. This idea will shackle these people in poverty, contribute to worsening air conditions, and depletes millions of acres of precious forests the world needs more of. Everyone loses.
