The government has worked with a Dutch environmental organization Ocean Cleanup to intercept rubbish from the Chao Phraya River before it enters the ocean to help tackle Thailand’s growing marine debris problem.

Department of Marine and Coastal Resources (DMCR) Director-General Sopon Thongdee said the "Interceptor" was deployed in Thailand and integrated it into the country’s waste management strategy in November 2019.

He said the Interceptor is capable of filtering up to 4 tons of rubbish and other debris from rivers and other bodies of water.

How could the government change the culture so that it becomes unacceptable to litter? It's not PC to say so, but the poor of the developing world have a lot of responsibility for this problem. I think about it almost every time I take a walk, seriously.

It's down to education, to make people understand the consequences of their actions - and make them want to do something.

While I would love that to happen, I know the reality is that the education and social system here is not geared up to encourage the general population to think for themselves and to be socially aware of how they need to take responsibility to reduce the problem.

Less use of plastics and also responsible disposal of rubbish is what's needed.

The times I've refused a plastic bag to put purchases in, and usually the staff accept it, but don't really see why.

The large shop chains who have stopped issuing millions of plastic bags is good, but there's still a long way to go.

For some ironic reason I imagine the waste management strategy would involve putting your request in the bin.

Thailand needs mandatory trash collection and proper disposal system.  Put all the unemployed tourist workers to work.  Buy 50,000 automated trash trucks and a millions cans a month.  But I know the plastic bins would just be burned.
