Cluster of Covid-19 Infections in Bang Khae Will not Become New Wave

BANGKOK (NNT) - The Department of Disease Control (DDC) on Sunday said a new cluster of Covid-19 infections in Bang Khae district will not become a new wave of the coronavirus outbreak.

DDC Director-General Dr. Opas Karnkawinpong said the new cluster was found at markets in Bang Khae because the markets are located close to each other, covering a large area, with at least 1,000 people constantly moving in and out.

He said some of the markets have low ceilings with poor ventilation, and most vendors were Thai while their employees were migrant workers. Even though vendors wore masks, they still kept them below their noses which defeated the intended purpose. Failing to wear masks properly will heighten the risk of infection.

Dr. Opas said the infected people from these markets comprised vendors and their employees and they have been sent to hospital. However, there had been no reports of customers being infected.

It would be interesting to know how much testing is done and where in Thailand. Let's take Chonburi - is there no (t enough) testing or really no Covid? Are the numbers of tests anywhere on the Internet?

But will not become a new wave... he hopes?

Thai Crystal Ball

Fully agree, this joker doesn't know, and in fact cannot know whether this outbreak will become a new wave or not. This is a classic case of wanting to make the people feel better bless 'em by telling porky pies, or by wanting to imply that government ministers are blessed with second sight. Either way,  It's a con job.

Did anybody else notice Bangkok’s Covid cases discovered by proactive testing rather than hospital walk-ins with symptoms. Via Richard Barrow, 22 today. NOT counting Bang Khae; 96 victims so far & thousands of test results outstanding.

Okay. At least they're testing somewhere! Of course, in the life cycle of Covid transmission, some tests might be too early or too late for accuracy.

We assume the 22 were discovered by contact tracing rather than random or generalised testing.

These are some big numbers. One more death.

Yeah, right, Happy Songkran… We really hope to splash Loong Too when he's out there shaking hands & kissing babies.

Encouraging domestic travel--idjits!

You can find out testing figures on MOPH Thai website, one day ago about 3000 I think roughly, but as to where they are testing??

He knows that the cunning little virus knows the difference between traders, employees and customers, as it also knows when it is 10pm, curfew time.

Or he knows that the government can control the numbers detected by just reducing tests carried out. Take UK now, 1.5 million tests a day, mix of PCR and lateral cross flow, cases 5-6000 per day, incidence of about 0.3% positive, actually quite low. Thailand average 3000 tests a day, 50-60 cases average, incidence of 2% from tests. Let people make up their own minds if covid is present in greater numbers than been reported.

I would like to know the tests per province in Thailand. I can't believe that such an important information is not available. But I cannot find it anywhere.

I live in Pattaya. There doesn't not seem to be any Covid here. So let's forget about all these precautions - or? Many places don't care anyway anymore. But is here really no Covid or simply no testing? And how is this in Hua Hin, or Phuket or Koh Samui or...

It’s infuriating that they have to mention once again that “the employees are migrant workers.”

They do everything they can to continue to spread the distrust and fear of foreigners and separate Thais from everyone else.

How about just saying about how people tested positive at the market. Would that be too difficult for these Neanderthals?

How easy is it to get tested there? Do they have a testing center there or is it know that one of the hospitals is where everyone goes?

If you don’t know, then they are probably not testing a lot there.

I asked our gardener, Burmese, just last week if he had been tested yet or if anyone he lives with has. He said it no because it was too expensive. I thought I had read it was free for them now, and it might be, but they don’t know it.

Also have to take the view that if they have no symptoms, or just mild symptoms, why would anyone risk getting incarcerated in hospital or detention centre for an undefined amount of time.

*puts hand up*

I've been convinced for a while that the numbers in Thailand been deliberately underestimated. I understand the reasons why that might be the case; which boil down to face-saving and the un-likelihood of being called out. Given the underlying quality of Thai competence. and  the importance of maintaining face in Thai culture, it seems very likely to me that causes of death have been widely attributed to side effects of COVID-19, rather than to COVID-19 itself so that deaths from COVID-19 can be under-reported with something approaching credibility. Not something I can prove, but something I definitely suspect. Call me a cynic.

Hey Ho and on we go.
