Popular Post webfact
U.S. President Joe Biden listens to a question as he holds his first formal news conference in the East Room of the White House in Washington, U.S., March 25, 2021. REUTERS/Leah Millis By Jarrett Renshaw and Jeff Mason WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden said on Thursday he plans to run for re-election in 2024. Biden, 78, is the oldest person to take office as president in U.S. history and there has been speculation that he would serve only one four-year term. "My plan is to run for re-election. That's my expectation," Biden told reporters at the White House. Biden then went on to offer a bit of a hedge. Asked again about the issue, he said: "I've never been able to plan four-and-a-half, three-and-a-half years ahead for certain." 2021-03-25T191806Z_1_LOV000MV1HQB3_RTRMADV_STREAM-2000-16X9-MP4_USA-BIDEN-CAMPAIGN-ROUGH-CUT.MP4 When asked Thursday whether he planned to run for re-election, U.S. President Joe Biden said: "My answer is yes, I plan to run for re-election. That’s my expectation." Bide also said he fully expected that Vice President Kamala Harris would remain on the ticket with him. "She's doing a great job. She's a great partner," he said. It is unusual to focus on running for re-election so early in a presidential term, but Biden's age and the possibility that his predecessor, Republican Donald Trump, may run again, have created early speculation about the 2024 presidential field. Biden had previously described himself as a transition figure. But had he said on Thursday that he did not plan to run again, it could have immediately made him into a kind of political lame duck at the very beginning of his presidency. Trump took steps to start his own re-election campaign early on in 2017 shortly after taking office. He has not said whether he plans to run again in 2024, preferring to keep fellow Republicans - some of whom are preparing to run themselves - guessing. Biden said he had no idea if Trump would be his opponent in the next election. "Oh come on," he said when asked about that, questioning what the Republican Party would even look like in the coming years. Trump disputed the results of the November election and skipped Biden's inauguration. Popular Post Kerryd
It's been said awhile ago that he'll be lucky to live through his term (and the picking Kamala Harris as his VP was done specifically as he isn't expected to live 4 more years, which would make her the first female president). Had to shake my head as it seemed the only 2 contenders for the Dems were Biden (78) or Sanders (79). Like, were they picking them in the hopes that whoever won would die in office ? It almost seems like that was the ulterior motive. 9 4

Popular Post Chomper Higgot
Of course a President Joe Biden has said he will run for re-election at the end of his first term, if he did not he would be hampering his own political power, a mistake British Prime Minister Blair demonstrated. Does it mean he’ll stand for re-election? Who knows, but with popularity amongst American voters north of 54%*, he would be foolish to rule it out. *The last incumbent never once broke above 49% and we still have people telling us he’s going to make a comeback. 10 2

There is also a strategic political benefit to Biden's announcement, whether or not he really runs again. It pressures Trump to also announce his candidacy early instead of hiding in a political shadow as 'kingmaker' until 2022/23. Biden's announcement might also convert some "troublesome" Democrat lawmakers to his current term agenda in anticipation of their being part of Biden's next administration. 2 2

Of course. He had no reason to talk about it at all. But he was asked and had to answer. It would have been politically insane to say no. It turns out Biden is a pretty good politician and so far an even better president. What does he really think about running again? I think he's very aware of his own human condition and probably doubts that he will. 10 1 1 2

And if you can’t come to terms with that reality at least try to grasp the idea that old age is what awaits us all and the diseases of old age are undoubtedly something many TVF members are struggling to deal with, either within themselves or within those they care about. The defeat of your guy was in no small part because Americans want a return to civility and decency - try it on for size, it might fit. Popular Post mfd101
My perception is that, so far, he's doing fine. He's been moving energetically to help the US recover from the horrors of the past 4 years and is certainly making up lost ground on the foreign relations front. (Dammit! I thought he was going to be a weakling, thinks Xi Jinping) He's appointed good people around him. And the one area that looks problematic has just been turned into a training ground for the Veep to show what she's made of. He's facing an almost unprecedented list of serious crises but has correctly prioritized the top ones of the pandemic and economic recovery. His approval ratings at 60 percent are nothing short of miraculous in a 50 50 country. While the divisions of the Mr trump era have likely caused scars that will last for decades, he's already making progress on beginning the healing by honestly tackling the fundamentals. He's made it clear that he really is president for ALL the American people so unlike his toxicaly divisive predecessor. I have just read a news article in the NZ Herald and it's pretty clear that at times, not many I may add, he loses the plot at questioning time, and it was stated that his team had spent days training him for this press conference, so that says something. He and his team are doing great things at the moment, and long may it continue, however they have a great backup in Kamala Harris, and should they need to call on her, then I have every confidence that she will make a great president, and the US will go from strength to strength. And for all of the posters calling out Biden as being old and incompetent, then how must it feel for them to realise that their previous loser, a lying and corrupt cult figure, was soundly beaten by an old duffer!!!! 8 1 4

And for all of the posters calling out Biden as being old and incompetent, then how must it feel for them to realise that their previous loser, a lying and corrupt cult figure, was soundly beaten by an old duffer!!!! Yes there is something Shakespearean about Biden's life story. When elected to the senate he was the youngest in the senate. Then tragedy struck his family and that almost didn't happen. Later he kept running for President again and again and again and attracted little support. Then after eight years serving as the popular VP to Obama he declines to take his turn (complicated by the death of his son) and defers to Hillary Clinton who turns out to be a horrible candidate and she loses to a reality show demagogue con man who turns out to be the most damaging president in American history. So Biden now well past his prime runs to restore the soul of America and that is indeed what he's trying to do. His time in history is nothing like what he imagined or hoped for but hes somehow perfect for these dark times. But he's on a clock of age related problems No I don’t think he'll be running for a second term but that's OK.
