Who would have thought that 50 years later, the well spoken young Thai man in that video would become the Minister of Foreign Affairs for Thailand.

So, foreigners went from being called "it" to being called "aliens" in the short space of 62 years.  Thailand is such a progressive country.   ????

............and still called 'it' as well....................That vid that jingthing posted was quite interesting and honest too. For the first time in my life I understood what it felt like to be called a monkey.....................

It's very scripted. Interesting how some of the things they're saying would still be in the script today.

As this is in the 'Pub', I'll comment.

Othe things from 1958.....

Munich Air Disaster - 8 Man U players dead.

Violence increased against the South Vietnamese gubmint.

Not forgetting, a rare Beatnik ad by JT:

Who knew about the Beatnik lettered coffee cups?

I sure am curious about the Beatnik instructions.

I think there are a couple of things to consider when you watch the video.

The first is that the Thai language has no words for "he" or "she".

The second is that in 1958 the vast majority of the foreigners in Thailand were Chinese people.

I wonder what they think when they see "monkeys" with more money than themselves.  ????

???   What about เขา (he) and เธอ (she).

Phonetic kao and thoer

And then they substituted the “it” with the words like “farang”.

But the first is he and she and it. And the second is you.

เขา is not used for 'it'. เธอ can be used for 2nd or 3rd person.
Although มัน sometimes gets used for he/she in informal speech, Thais will object to it when they feel it's out of place.

When they want my attention they shout.... " OYYYY you"
