:o I once used the pages of a bible for Zig-Zags.

Isn't the old bob hope a part of hindu religious practices?

I seem to remember it was freely available in Shiva temples in India/

:o:D

Nice!

I once used Tiggy's fur as a rug to procreate on.

But anyway...

:o Which bus are you folks on? I think we need different smoking busses. I want the cig and wine bus. If you rip out the back seat, I'll stretch out on Fluffy or Tiggy. The rest of you are too skinny.

And, my aunty was a god. Her father was that tall guy. What's his name.

Well , all you seegar suckers and rug munchers , a challenge .

:o

Ok while the rest of the forum goes off in drug infused babble.

I don't think we can have any true conception of what God is. I think it is truly beyond our bounds of conception to make any statement other than for a large percentage of the worlds population there is a belief that God exists. I personally don't see God as some old guy with long flowing hair and a crook sitting up there in heaven saying "right gotcha - sneak off with another man's wife will you - I shall smite you with a thunderbolt"

I think that God in whatever form is unveiled to us as a mystery after we die. To argue about whether God has a father is in my view a pointless exercise. Much better would be "does God exist?"

Ok, now how do the Scientologists fit into the scheme of things?

Has anyone here read L Ron Hubbard's Dianetics?

I have.

Freaky stuff if it's true..... :o

To be honest I have no idea. I don't know anything about scientology nor am I a Christian. I personally think that the whole Scientology bag smacks of a cult and I have an adversion to those sorts of things.

The Romans thought that Christianity was a Cult as well....... :D

They may have been correct. The difference between the two is that Christianity did not nor does it now require people handing over large amounts of money to the leadership in order to move up the chain to enlightenment. One of the few things I do know about Scientology is that people have to pay increasing amounts of money to move from one level to the next. That to me is the part about it being a cult that is of concern. However to be fair to the organisation I am not a member nor have a great deal of knowledge of their inner workings.

You're all welcome to join my religion. A non refundable 100 pound deposit will be require to apply.

But seriously, as we seem to have gone back on topic; I believe that all of these "holy" books have sustainable and valuable points, but I see them as metaphors. The books were written as metaphors as to how one should live their life, how one can find their own personal vision/interpretation of god.

I feel we each have a god of our own making. The better we can see ourselves, the better our communication is with our own god, so to speak.

And for that I need no designated place of worship, and I need no designated prayer. I need no designated rules, but those laid down by basic principles of common decency toward fellow man.

I suppose this is one of those that could be elaborated on massively, but I'll leave it there for now.

I agree, I think that all religions are an attempt to give direction and hope to people irrespective of denomination or creed. If someone can use their own set of morals which enhance their life then in my opinion that is perfectly valid. They may or may not have a consideration of God as a deity but that is their own choice. In the end one of the basic concepts of religion is Free Choice. The choice to do good or evil. The choice to accept or reject. The choice to choose a particular creed. The choice to worship in whatever manner you feel so inclined.

My ex from England used to dance naked in the moonlight doing Sabbats and Esbats according to her interpretation of a Gardnerian revival of witchcraft. It didn't do anything for me but it made her happy and she still is involved in it after more than 30 years.

I bet at first she looked pretty sexy dancing butt neked. But after 30 years, well erm :o There should be an age limit attached to that sort of thing :D

Yes she did during the time we were married but sad to say from the last photograph a mutual friend sent me a couple of months ago, age has not been kind.

I do, but he doesn't care much as long as we get laid in a considerate manner. :o

Discuss arbitrarily assigned characteristics of a hypothetical being? What would that accomplish? Reminds me of what Johnny Carson used to say "if you buy the premise, you buy the bit."

Sorry guys, been off-line for ages and have missed several pages of good discussion.

Farangsay's above point is a philosophical one. However, I agree, God does not have a father!

Welcome back Tigger , you were missed !

BTW Did anybody notice all the US presidential hopefuls having to declare , on TV and in front of a (religiously) partisan audience , their personal faith levels. Should this be regarded as normal , unusual or disturbing.

Personally I am for total separation of church and state and freedom of religion (within limits - no you cannot sacrifice virgins and you with the dreadlocks put that joint away before I have to notice it).

'It is on the pretence of divine authority that human authority is founded.' Mikhail Bakunin.

The Bible, which is a very interesting and here and there very profound book when considered as one of the oldest surviving manifestations of human wisdom and fancy, expresses this truth very naively in its myth of original sin. Jehovah, who of all the good gods adored by men was certainly the most jealous, the most vain, the most ferocious, the most unjust, the most bloodthirsty, the most despotic, and the most hostile to human dignity and liberty-Jehovah had just created Adam and Eve, to satisfy we know not what caprice; no doubt to while away his time, which must weigh heavy on his hands in his eternal egoistic solitude, or that he might have some new slaves. He generously placed at their disposal the whole earth, with all its fruits and animals, and set but a single limit to this complete enjoyment. He expressly forbade them from touching the fruit of the tree of knowledge. He wished, therefore, that man, destitute of all understanding of himself, should remain an eternal beast, ever on all-fours before the eternal God, his creator and his master. But here steps in Satan, the eternal rebel, the first freethinker and the emancipator of worlds. He makes man ashamed of his bestial ignorance and obedience; he emancipates him, stamps upon his brow the seal of liberty and humanity, in urging him to disobey and eat of the fruit of knowledge.

Why would God need an Irishman ??

My daughter came home from school the other day and said

" Daddy.........Jesus was a Jew "

So should the question be..........

" No true God has a Rabbi " ?

Okay, a quick one to dispel 'myths'. As I have already stated in this thread, 'he11' in the Hebrew is just referring to the grave. Also 'satan' in the Hebrew is just an 'adversary' or an 'opponent'. No mythical place of punishment or mythical being called satan. Check it out!

Inspired by Robski's rant...

Do you think that is a myth?

'It is on the pretence of divine authority that human authority is founded.' Mikhail Bakunin.

Robski, remember what we've said (agreed?) on previous pages, we are all entitled to our opinions and views. I know that my posting on this thread will not make you a believer, nor will your posting on this thread make me an unbeliever!

Let's just leave it at that...

Okay, fair do's. Just proving my Anarchist credentials, I had to have a good think about wether a belief in God and Anarchism were compatable, and I think that they are, that there is no conflict of interest, that it is indeed religion that is my bane.

But it's always fun to try, either way, is it not? :o
