It would appear the lockdowns are not working? Time to try another strategy? Maybe eliminate the wearing of masks in cars, with family members? Maybe figure out a way to get some efficient and effective people involved in the national vaccination drive? Maybe replace the health minister with someone competent?

Any other ideas out there?

For those of us who don't claim to be experts but were uncomfortable about zero infections for 100 days a year ago are now seeing what we suspected may happen when looking elsewhere in the world then. No infections now must mean if there are no 'imports" we can keep it like that.

A few on this forum have suggested that why not allocate more soldiers to the leaky borders? I raise this as I live absolutely next door to a large military camp - I see them every day playing basketball- and even now seems nobody has left here to go anywhere to help to some degree.

The stakes are so high, especially with the economics of the country going downhill fast and no real end in sight, so I can see no reason why all available are not sent to places where they could mitigate the problems. In the long term, some normality should be the target and the money spent on that is worth it. The people want to see there is a plan and something on the ground that is really working towards such an end.

Thai officials from all quarters want to someone to blame, somehow absolving them of responsibility.

Thailand was lauded last year then as being in control and an example for the world but not now - what happened? Same can be said of Sweden.

Is Thailand in Control? Does it have some master plan?

And about vaccines; all over the world vaccines are being pumped into peoples arms and making good impact - but not here!

Continuing to play the billion Baht game with the promise of tourists is wasting time and offering false hope to those who know now, for sure, won't happen for the best part of a good while.

BP says the third wave was caused by 6 Thais involved with the ownership/management of a Thai owned casino just over the border in Cambodia.  Just like the  casinos over the border in Burma they have special arrangements with Immigration to flit back and forth over the border without immigration formalities or quarantine.  They made a bee line for Bangkok and the hi-so silicone touting strip joints of Thonglor and Ekkamai for some well earned R&R and the rest is history.  The police inestigations only revealed that nothing can be revealed because the owners of the cosino and the strip clubs are untouchable. End of investigation.

Definitely not the right direction for the numbers to be headed. I really do not see Covid being resolved here now, for a very long time and really shows how lucky we were to temporarily dodge the bullet last year.

Are we  heading in the right direction? Or is the next covid virus going to take many years to develop? What do you think.

It is truly pathetic to see the billioinaire tourism minister insisting that Thailand is about to reopen for tourism as well as announcing the scheme to fleece incoming tourists for 300 baht a head to go into someone's pocket.

Anutin has been fond of saying he was doing a great job as evidenced by the numbers.  He probably thinks he just got unlucky this time but the truth is that he got lucky last year, whereas we are seeing the results of his efforts this year.

Don't expect too  much

Dr Gédéon confirmed that there is continuous community transmission. “Seychelles have currently 1068 active cases out of which 40 are health workers. Out of the confirmed 6373 cumulative cases, 5277 cases have been recovered. Of the current active cases, 84% are Seychellois and 16% foreigners. 65% of active cases are unvaccinated or had one dose of vaccine. 35% of the positive cases have taken both doses. Of all vaccinated cases 81% had received both doses and have let down their guard. The total number of pupils who tested positive from Crèche 1 to S5 are 49 and 16 are from post-secondary. The Family Hospital services are working at capacity.”

Seychelles is the most vaccinated country on earth

Unfortunately many countries not only Thailand appear to have taken no notice of the difficulties experienced by other countries who didn't take adequate steps early enough.

There are a few European countries who have vaccinated a large percentage of people and are still experiencing clusters of new outbreaks of different variants, it seems that the only way forward will be herd immunity.

You can examine and speculate and ponder over all the figures put out but until there is mass testing you are never going to get a true figure.

Good point. It boggles the mind to consider that they do not see the border as the #1 priority.

I think it comes down to cheap labor and protecting the immigration franchises at the border, at the cost of all else?

Sometimes, that desire to find the presence of common sense and reason, within policy here, can be a frustrating task.

I went for aa drive with the family yesterday just to get outside of BKK.  We all had our masks on in the car, but I watched as other cars drove by filled with families and low and behold no masks.  Waiting on a law to forbid drinking a soda while driving as well....

Laws in Thailand are over-rated. That's why nobody observes them.

It often takes a day or two before new cases get processed and confirmed in the system.

One of the reports posted earlier in this thread said the factory in PKK was going to be converted into a field hospital for the time being.

I guess if the factory is sealed off with Covid infected people inside, die facto, it’s a field hospital ????.

god help them inside if they need any serious medical care.

Read it earlier. The report (and there are many similar), states that 62% of the population have been vaccinated. By inference, 38% have not. Add to this the the realistivcally vague or unknown global efficacy of vaccines and the fact that 10% of positive cases were tourists then the numbers (around 100 positive cases per day) may just add up.

Hence the importance of getting very high vaccination rates. Although vaccine does not stop you from getting infected, studies have shown reduced transmission if you have been vaccinated, but if you have 40% of population walking around unvaccinated, there is still a large pool of hosts for the virus to keep spreading. Also vaccination stops a large percentage of those who get infected getting seriously ill and not putting pressure on healthcare systems. Theory is that eventually it will just become an annoying virus I think, much like various other viruses that infect us but we shrug off after some home medication.

Exactly. If you are in the 70% vaccinated, you just caught something akin to a cold. If you are in the 30%, you are in the same boat you are in now. One reason why 70% for herd immunity always seemed low to me. 30% of a country’s population is a heck of a lot of people if they are in big cities.

I am of the most resolute conviction that cases HAVE gone exponential and that this is raging like wildfire right now throughout Thailand.

Many people will think I am wrong.

The thing is that only time will tell. With this kind of raging pandemic there is only so long that reality can be surpressed. And in my opinion we are very fast approaching that point.

Positive case numbers tell you nothing of the reality for reasons already discussed ad infinitum.

No links needed, no evedience required. Either I will be proven right or proven wrong over the coming days and months. I will be right, you will see.

So thus far, the Sinovac vaccine being used in Thailand has not yet been approved by either the WHO or the CDC/FDA in the U.S.

Now China are involved in the group (WHO) it’s only a matter of time before it is given the go ahead. It was China that helped Tedros Get to the top position.

Why Thailand always makes plans 6 months ahead, when they don't have the slightest control over the current situation yet?

Its no different than Australia declaring it must keep Australians locked up for another 12 months when they dont even know what the situation will be in 2-3 months time.

Actually ill take Thailands approach anytime.

Clearly, Covid is here for the long run.

We can suffer it with endless lockdowns and NO quality of life till goodness knows when

or we can try to manage it and start living again.

Personally, Id sooner join those who have already succumbed to it, rather than sit through another X years of this.

A number of tourists who tested positive for the virus stated that follow-up tests conducted immediately afterwards showed they were not, in fact, infected. They complained that the need to quarantine in local hotels was costing them hundreds of dollars.

I bet international tourists cannot wait for Thailand to reopen, to incur the same sort of risk / headaches.

Personally I hope it IS raging at the moment. Because if so, whilst tragic, the number of cases and deaths are “acceptable”, so to speak. But if it’s not yet raging and starts to do so soon, the numbers could get very serious.

Field hospital beds in Bangkok in short supply according to this:

About 30 COVID-19 patients, with mild symptoms, have been transferred from Bangkok to a field hospital in the coastal province of Samut Sakhon for treatment, as ordered by the Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA).

Ambulances from different hospitals made about 10 trips to take the patients to the field hospital which is, so far, accommodating about 600 patients from Bangkok and its neighboring provinces.

The mask usage in Thailand has been the same for a year now but still the numbers go up. You cannot go any shop without wearing a mask. Still, the numbers jumped tenfold in matter of couple weeks. What changed? Nothing when it comes to masks. Thais did not use any less masks last March than last month.
