Scarily similar to a real incident some years ago in the UK where a goth couple were brutal attacked, but the boy survived and the girl died.

I recall the leader was sentenced to 10 years and at the age 18....what a pathetic sentence........no empathy for him.

Must be horrible for the parents, if they are still alive, to see this portrayal of what might have happened.

It was said to be based on a true story and his gf in the soap was a Goth, so yes, probably the same one.

It always amazes me ...

Rwandian genocide, Serbian genocide, Darfur, ... I could go on and on

Not a single tear shed for millions, while a fictional character on a soap opera tugs at peoples heart strings.

Empathy, compassion, nowhere to be seen

Nothing new here.  I mean, who didn't shed a tear after Grace Archer rushed into the burning stables to try to save her friend's horse?

Movies, music and books can evoke an emotional response over a fictional character- there is nothing abnormal about that. What is sad is that so many watch soaps. I'm guilty myself, but now I wish I'd done something better with my time.

Unfortunately the dark side ( visual media ) force is stronger than the power of books.

I didn't know a single person in Rwanda or Serbia, so I had no emotional attachment to them. People that come to know a character in a story feel emotionally attached to them.

They say watching TV 'Dumbs Down' the population...

Here's proof.

Emotionally attached to a fantasy character on a soap opera.

Did they think Bambi was real - cry when Mom got shot ?

Once Upon a Time ...

It's not so much the character in the movie, but more about the emotions that arise in ourselves, probably because of some event that happened in the past, that are triggered by the movie. Eg, when we watch a movie about a lost love, we may remember the lost loves we ourselves had.

For Bambi, substitute a loved pet that died.
