Thailand may soon lift quarantine requirements for vaccinated visitors to Bangkok; an empty Erawan Shrine amid Bangkok’s third Covid-19 wave pictured

By TTG Asia

Tourism operators in Thailand have hailed the country’s plan to waive quarantine for vaccinated travellers from October as a positive step towards positioning the country for a robust post-pandemic recovery.

However, that plan hinges on the success of the Phuket Sandbox programme, which is expected to start in July. Under that plan, vaccinated tourists will be allowed to visit Phuket, Chiang Mai, Koh Samui, Krabi and Pattaya without mandatory quarantine.

If successful, four other cities – Bangkok, Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan and Buriram – will join Phuket in exempting vaccinated tourists from quarantine from October.

To reopen borders to foreign tourists, authorities are aiming to vaccinate more than 70 per cent of the nation’s population by the end of this year.

However, the country must also look at the availability of commercial flights flying in and out of the country.

Want to bet that you have to be vaccinated fully, have proof in form of certificate, translate certificate into Thai, buy covid insurance, have test 72 hours before and test 5 days after entering Thai

  • How ironic that the previously insulted “dirty foreigner” is now the desired clean tourist visiting a “dirty” country.

  • Why would anyone would want to come to Thailand now is beyond me, what with all the restrictions, closed venues, rampant Covid everywhere and no end in sigh,t what are the upsides of visiting Thailand

Wasn’t a pre requisite for opening this scheme in July that 70% of the locals had to be vaccinated first.?

How is that going to happen for those participants in July, then again for the rest in October when the target is now 70% of the population by the end of the year?

One minute Phuket is happening in July, the next it's not. Have they flippin' decided yet? If so, is it 7 days on the island or 14 ?

If Thailand opening to vaccinated tourists is anything more than showing your vaccination card in departures and immigration , then it's not going to be a success is it ?

They could vaccinate 70% of people in Phuket and only open Phuket airport for tourists.

Don't  forget the ankle  bracelet and  daily  reporting to the nearest  police  station in triplicate.

Some  would come  because it's a  lot  quieter, I  know  I  would, I don't  travel much now as mass  tourism has wrecked the entire  world. Tere are  just  too  many people.

It's  dirty alright, the locals forever throwing their  rubbish anywhere they want, they simply don't  care, not  one  jot.

That will be the conclusion that the TAT come to in April 2022, after they struggle to get 100,000 tourists for high season.

Clueless wonders. Governments from vaccinated countries don't want their people travelling to Thailand. Why does Thailand think it's calling all the shots? They are lagging behind, laughably so.

opening for wave 5, i am afraid

How do they plan on getting the tourist to Petchaburi or Prachuap without using land transport through "closed" provinces? Flights to Hua Hin?

Tourism is dead for Thailand.

The insurance requirement will be kept in place. If you test positive (could be false positive) you'll spend your very precious holiday locked up in hospital-better have cover for that.

The tourism industry is going to be very disappointed this year and next, at a minimum

It must be the masked girls. They look so sweet. I think.

That’s great the Thailand Sandbox program UNTIL you read the recent Jonas Salk report on the CV and the vaccine!

Jonas Salk is the premier institute studying virus.
better read it first!

More <deleted> what will they come up with tomorrow

There other countries that are open with a lot more cases (and restrictions).  Tourists still go.
