Thailand reports new daily record of 34 coronavirus deaths, 1983 COVID-19 cases

(Reuters) - Thailand reported on Wednesday a new daily record of 34 coronavirus deaths as authorities try to tackle a third wave of infections in the Southeast Asian country.

 

Thailand's COVID-19 taskforce also reported 1,983 new COVID-19 cases, taking the total number of infections to 88,907 since the pandemic began last year. The total number of fatalities now stands at 486.

Thailand's record number of 34 new COVID deaths reported Wednesday is being driven by a slow but steadily increasing number of critically ill patients who are filling up the nation's intensive care hospital beds.

 

The country also set new pandemic records on Wednesday reporting 1,226 patients in critical condition and 401 of those requiring ventilators to breathe. That critical cases number has almost doubled over the past 16 days from 628 on April 27, and has increased almost daily during the past month. That number had been just a few dozen as of mid April.

 

The rising numbers of critically ill COVID patients stands in stark contrast to Thailand's overall count of daily new COVID cases, which has been bouncing just above and below 2,000 per day for more than two weeks now, setting no clear trend, as with Wednesday's 1,983 new cases report.

 

The critical condition group of patients is only a small share of the nearly 30,000 COVID positive patients currently hospitalized in some type of facility (about two-thirds in traditional hospitals and the remainder in makeshift field hospitals or other facilities) under a government policy to quarantine all positive cases.

 

But that population has been steadily increasing, with new critical cases outstripping deaths or recoveries, to now pandemic record levels for Thailand, fueling the increasing death toll. The day before on Tuesday, Thailand had reported 31 new deaths, tying its prior high from May 3.

 

A government spokeswoman, meanwhile, insisted that the country's medical facilities remain capable of handling the COVID hospitalizations, including the critical ones. "We can confirm that the existing medical facilities we have are still manageable and still able to accommodate patients, both with mild and severe symptoms," the spokeswoman said.

 

The country currently is battling its so-called third wave of COVID cases that began at the start of April, and just since then has led to more than 60,000 cases and 392 of Thailand's total 486 official COVID deaths. The current outbreak is by far the country's worst since the start of the pandemic in early 2020.

 

Overall, though, Thailand continues to fare better than many other nations in the COVID pandemic, with a relatively low per capita death rate and low rates of reported infections, though the latter may be aided by limited rates of testing.

 

To combat the pandemic, Thailand has drastically curtailed its economic life blood of international tourism, and in the past month shuttered all schools and bars, nightclubs and other entertainment venues nationwide, closed many types of public gathering spots in Bangkok and adjoining provinces, and imposed a nationwide face mask wearing policy.

 

The chart below shows the per capita COVID death rates for selected world countries on May 11, 2021, with Thailand ranking near the bottom based on deaths that day per million population.

The latest rolling seven-day COVID case count and deaths trends for Thailand are only updated through Monday, May 10, and thus don't yet reflect Wednesday's record high number of 34 new COVID deaths. But the sub-2000-level average daily new case counts continue to remain below the prior highs set in the last week of April.

The Chonburi Department of Public Health announced 57 new and confirmed cases of Covid-19 this morning (May 12^th), the lowest number of cases since April 9th.

 

The district-level new cases were as follows today:

Mueang Chonburi with 18, Si Racha 9, Banglamung (including Pattaya) 21, Sattahip 1, Ban Bueang 2, and Phan Thong 6.

PM declares vaccination national agenda as he urges all Thais to be vaccinated

 

Prime Minster Prayut Chan-o-cha, today (Tuesday) declared COVID-19 vaccination program Thailand’s national agenda as he urged Thai people to get vaccinated as many as possible, pointing out that vaccines are the key element which will usher Thailand through the crisis.

 

In his Facebook post..., the prime minister reaffirmed his confidence that Thailand would receive up to 100 million doses of vaccines this year, so that 50 million Thais would be inoculated within this year to develop herd immunity to fight against the virus. He also aimed to procure an addition of 50 million doses from different sources, making the total 150 million.

 

According to the prime minister, Thailand would be the production hub of the British-made AstraZeneca vaccine in Asean with Siam Bioscience, the only Thai firm authorized to produce AstraZeneca vaccine under technological transfer agreement, adding that the pharmaceutical company would deliver a minimum of 61 million doses of vaccine for the Thai people which will provide Thailand with long-term vaccine security.

Did they say where the Mueang cases were?

On April 10th the majority were at the Flintstones pub which is a long way out of the city, but not that far from me. Hopefully that cluster has been dealt with.

What you call "confidence" is actually resolution. A small sample might tell us the positivity rate is 5.17%, whereas a larger sample would tell us it is 5.17695%.

This is not about positivity rating though is it, its about your post on comparing flatline numbers when you then failed to take into account the number of tests as a variable for confidence.

 

Also what I call confidence is exactly what the term describes otherwise I would not have used it. Please don't try to tell me what I meant.

RIP to the 34 people who lost their lives.

It's not showing any signs of abating, is it? Just seven weeks until the Phuket sandbox idiocy pilot scheme is due to start, and to allow entertainment venues, bars and eateries to reopen they're going to need far fewer deaths and daily new cases. Maybe they'll get lucky, and maybe the authorities will simply gerrymander the numbers, but looking at the figures over the last month it's kind of hard to see how it's going to happen naturally.

Well when you have a government as corrupt at this one and a class of untouchables keeping them there it is hardly surprising that you and most of the Thai population distrust anything they say. Especially so when it is about such a dangerous pandemic. The only people who appear to be taken in by their published figures are some members of this forum which I find quite sad that they are so supportive of them.

Would it be quite right if they kept going up and everyone had to stay indoors.

That is what happened in Morocco, they used drones to patrol the streets and anyone found outside without government approval was arrested.

People should be careful what they wish for, reality, like beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

For a "rough" comparison on case fatality, the UK is now reporting zero deaths despite having a higher daily positive case count than Thailand

So sad isn't it.  Yet strange that unlike almost all other countries,  in Thailand it appears it has only affected the less well off when it comes to deaths. Now we know from the world records so far that generally it is the less  well off that are disproportionately affected but for Thailand to have 98% deaths amongst the disadvantaged of the nation is surprising.

Another one! These are just the ones that we know about because of their high profile status. The prison system must be rife with the virus. No mention by officials on this, similar to when we were no longer given an official reports after the migrants were locked in the factories and left to develop herd immunity in samut sakhon

The possibilities of the vaccinated people still being infected but not severely could be a reason.  We never seem to hear the stories of vaccinated people being infected however.  My view on that is they do not want people to abstain form getting vaccinated even though the chance of being infected is there.  Yesterdays Post of the Infectious disease doctor who had been vaccinated is surely making the rounds.

Yes thats a possibility in the UK.

 

Here the fatality rate is rising fast and for that to happen it can only be one of two things.

 

1. Either this UK strain is more deadly but there is no evidence published to back that option or.

2. Positive cases are being under counted and so we are seeing higher mortality.

 

I can't think of other possibilities? Unless treatment here of the severely sick is not as it should be?
