Reports 38,000 prisoners to be released is FAKE NEWS, says prison chief

The director of Thailand prisons said that reports circulating on social media that 38,000 prisoners are set to be released on the occasion of Queen Suthida's birthday on June 3rd are fake news.

 

Department of Corrections chief Ayut Sinthaphaphan asked the public not to share such erroneous stories that were causing damage and fear.

 

He said that it happened every year and this year the stories had just been changed a little to update them and make them believable with a new date. 

 

He used the opportunity in the spotlight to highlight his department's CARE program - Center for Assistance to Reintegration and Employment - rehabilitation program for prisoners to reenter society and been good people, reported Daily News.

What he failed to add was, leave the erroneous stories to us, as we are much better than the public at doing that.????????????????????

Well, there are royal pardons, maybe annually in May to mark the King's ascension to the throne.

 

I saw a blurb about 1,590 prisoners being released via Royal Pardons in Phuket last week.

 

And an article from two years ago (again, in May) mentioned "tens of thousands" released on Royal Pardons.

 

 

Rather than screaming about fake news maybe the prison chief could just provide facts on releases, and plans to deal with the virus in the prisons which he is responsible for?

 

The way to deal with fake news is to be open, honest, accurate and transparent.

 

When you can't do that, scream about fake news I guess.
