On the positive side 38,000 prisoners are being released.  Crime rates should go down, and I already feel safer that Covid is under control.  Thank you Khun Anutin and Uncle Tu, never felt so safe and

Are new COVID cases numbering more than 3,000 per day the “new normal” for Thailand right now?

That’s certainly the way it looks after the Thai government on Tuesday reported another 3,226 COVID cases – 2,344 in the general population and 882 among prison inmates – marking the fifth day out of the past seven that Thailand has exceeded the 3,000 new COVID cases mark.

Some days it’s been larger increases among the general population, and other days like Tuesday it’s been spikes among the country’s prison population. But one way or the other, the new COVID case totals lately keep passing the 3,000 mark – something that only happened in Thailand for the first time on May 13.

It’s a sign of how fast things have changed during the course of the pandemic. Back at the beginning of April, the country’s daily case count was in the dozens. By mid-April it had climbed to around 1,500 per day, then hit about 2,000 regularly by late April and early May, and now by the end of May is regularly around 3,000 each day.

In one good sign, Tuesday’s 2,344 new general population cases was the lowest general population tally in the past five days. But on the flip side, Tuesday’s 882 new prison cases was the highest daily prison cases tally in the past four days.

The question at this point then becomes, what happens from this point forward?

In one indicator, the country on Tuesday set yet another record for numbers of COVID patients hospitalized in quarantine, now exceeding 45,000, as the 3,226 new cases once again exceeded the reported 3,094 patient recoveries who were released in the latest day.

The hospitalized COVID population rose from 45,307 to 45,413 over the past day. The number of critical patients among those rose from 1,169 to 1,187. But the share of those critical patients requiring ventilators to breathe dropped from 406 to 399.

Osaka, Japan the health care system is nearly at capacity and ready to crumble - by their own admission.

Thailand is not beyond this either.

3k per day that's 90000 cases per week.  The math is simple when you look at how many end up in ICU's, hospitalized, etc.

Something will change - either further restrictions or vaccines.

Outside of the prisons and the labor camps, and factories, the virus is becoming scarce.

Only 3 cases in Pattaya today.

There isn't enough testing.

How predictable. I am convinced it is just like below with the numbers somewhere between 2k and 3.5k

He obviously hasn't read the newspapers today, saying the second dose is delayed.

Yes outside of the Prisons, labour camps, factories, old peoples homes, slum areas's where the poor Thai's live, migrant camps, markets, entertainment venues as they're closed, schools in Bangkok as they're closed, then everything is really rosy.

Is there anything else we should exclude to bring down the numbers and make the virus even more scarce?

Oh yea, you've already got it, not enough testing......????

Yep, outside of some pockets, this wave is receding.

In Chonburi, I can see more openings on June 1, and maybe everything open on July 1.

On the positive side 38,000 prisoners are being released.  Crime rates should go down, and I already feel safer that Covid is under control.  Thank you Khun Anutin and Uncle Tu, never felt so safe and thank you for bringing the happiness back to the country.  especially since your testing is top notch and we have vaccines available from everywhere.

This post just drips with sarcasm.  How can this government live with themselves.  Oh yes by smiling every time they look at their bank accounts.

Rolling 7 day averages for cases on the uptick.  Stay safe and one day soon, 6 months from now the country may have vaccines for all to be inoculated with if they want to be vaccinated that is.

Brown envelope is now in the mail sorry about the delay!

"Are new COVID cases numbering more than 3,000 per day the “new normal” for Thailand right now?"

It does look so. They are reluctant to impose nationwide lockdown,  as it will damage further the economy.  Also they have proven beyond doubt that they can't control the land borders, so nationwide lockdown would have limited effect.

The emphasis now seems to be on the vaccinations, but there are still multiple issues in that area. The progress is too slow.

What all this means in practice for some of us,  is that we may be disappointed if we plan to go outside Thailand and hope to come back without the 14 days quarantine. The dates for opening IMO are likely to be moved further.

I hope you're right.  I'm still hoping my kid's Bangkok school will be able to open properly on 14 June.

What you are seeing in Thailand, Japan, Korea...............is that unless you have a good old first wave like the UK and USA did........then you are going to keep suffering for a long time.

UK and USA are getting back to normal now...........all those countries so smug in 2020 will end up suffering continuous outbreaks in 2021 and 2022.

The old saying, he who laughs last, laughs longest.

Without actual testing numbers we have no idea whats going on. If they did around 100,000 tests yesterday then today's positive infection numbers represents 3% of those tested. 10,000 is 30% positivity rate. <10,000 would be >30% positivity rate of those tested. 5000 tests would be 60%. These are figures needed for true transparency nation wide to see just how good or how bad things are going. Without them we cannot know the actual situation.

p.s. who thinks they did 100,000?

Nope. The initial infection waves in the US and the UK didn’t come close to generating herd immunity. The recent drop in new infections in the US and the UK is due to something called “vaccination “.

Over the last few days, they did more than 100,000 tests.

Yea because you're good with your predictions right?

Being the guy who posted 3 weeks ago that the epidemic wasn’t going to grow exponentially, as many here predicted, yeah. What did I post? “Expect a more or less flat line, within a limited range, with a random walk”, as the numbers peaked in late April.

I'm talking about 1 day. If they did more than 100,000 tests (exact numbers would be good, maybe you can share this with us)over the last few days then the postivity rate of those tested is still around 10%. That's a huge number as it is. 1 in 10 people tested positive.

So the big fall in cases in May 2020 was due to a vaccine that did not exist at the time ?

The virus will mutate........just like flu has over decades.....

You cannot defeat Mother Nature, she will win in the end.......all that is happening now is delaying the inevitable.
