Government adjusts COVID-19 vaccine distribution plans

BANGKOK (NNT) - The government has adjusted its vaccine distribution plans, to accommodate the fluid COVID-19 situation in the country, saying the focus now is on giving the first dose of COVID-19 vaccines to as many people as possible.

Public Health Ministry Permanent Secretary Dr. Kiattiphum Wongrajit said the ministry has decided that the second dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine will now be administered 16 weeks after the first dose, as opposed to 10 weeks, insisting that the delay will not have a negative effect on the immune response to COVID-19.

He said those scheduled to receive their first dose in June will receive their second shot around October, adding that the government has ordered 3 million doses from Sinovac, which will start to arrive next month.

Dr. Kiattiphum made the remarks after a number of hospitals announced that they will not be able to administer the second shot of the AstraZeneca vaccine in time to those who have received their first shot.

Haydays for vaccin tourist companies.

So , those who have had the first shot of AZ will now have to wait 16 weeks for the second shot ……… but they have ordered  another 3 million doses of Sinovac  ……. just in case !!

Anyone reading anything between the lines here ??

It's ok for the PM to get his 2nd vaccine shot after 10 weeks, but us mere mortals will have to wait 16 weeks!

In other words yet another fark up and all that was said is not going ahead

When and where was this announced?

Hmm. The rosy picture painted by the authorities when they release those power point slides showing all the millions of vaccines that will be arriving starting from June, seems not so rosy any more. June is fast approaching and so the bluff has been called, or so it seems.

delaying the second shot is a valid strategy, most notably used in the UK when they were in very desperate straits. So I can see the reasoning being used.

Where there is a disconnect however is that the overall situation in Thailand is being presented as being under control and with plenty of vaccines available. In fact, if my memory serves me correctly,  the health minister himself stated only recently that anyone who wants a vaccine, can get a vaccine.

I’m a little concerned about the 4 month gap. I think the UK only stretched it to 3 months, but I may be wrong on that. I appreciate the reassurance from the Thai authorities saying that it doesn’t reduce the effectiveness, but I will be doing a little research to try and get that point independently corroborated.

all in all? Another piece of the jig saw puzzle that is somewhat concerning.

update:

my memory didn’t fail me. UK stretched it to 12 weeks, now reducing it to 8 weeks because of the prevalence of the Indian variant.

no indication yet of whether the 16 weeks Thailand is proposing is acceptable.

Updated info

When will it be "tweaked" to 24 weeks?

This assumes you can get the first shot.

Again, with the sign in the bar....

Spot on.

Already 'announced' in another publication.

The fluid situation is missing just one thing ..fluid ????

Stretching a vial of 10 shots to 12, and stretching the time between doses to 16 weeks, and injecting a vaccine that has not been approved by The WHO...

...what's there to worry about?

It's never good news any time a government plan is 'adjusted'.

As if there ever was "a plan".

Wow, they really are clever...

Who would have thought that vaccinating people quickly is important?

Unattractive for someone waiting on a vaccine passport and a trip to another country where one is required.

Yes. You too cannot have a vaccine.

But, thanks to the government's efforts, you can register for one.

Mission Accomplished.

In the land of illusion, issuing declarations, decrees, pleas, threats, orders and announcements are fertile ground for "misunderstandings", retractions, back-stepping and downright lies. With no system of accountability, the cycle repeats itself unchecked.

Oh, there are plans.  Every day a new plan, usually changing the plan from the day before.  Plan, plan, plan.  A plan for this.  A plan for that.  Plan, plan, plan away.  Never any action.

"Accountability" is only applied for someone named Shinawatra, evidently.

All others pass Go and collect 200,000,000 baht. And don't forget your free watch.

Hmmm.. Seems like you have your own set of numbers for influenza. Or your internet friends have lied to you again.

Could it also be to create more panic and push those who don't want the Chinese vax to get that ?

You know people will think your a conspiracy theorist unless you can back up what your saying, and then when you do back it up, then what, will they listen and acknowledge what you just pointed out.

I think people are in a real panic and are forgetting about their immune systems and other alternatives, it's a full on drive for vaccinations, day in, day out, each to their own.

44,549 people died in Thailand alone in 2018 from Influenza & Pneumonia in 2018.
