Yeah, that works both ways. I was of similar mind, the UK's big one is the Elgin Marbles. I used to think nah, they're better off in the British Museum. But with modern laser scanning it's perfectly possible to create a near perfect replica. So the British Museum can have a perfect copy and the originals go back to Greece. No one will really notice the difference.

I don't see anything in the linked article to explain how/why those lintels got to the US.

Were they stolen or did someone buy them in good faith?

I always wondered what is understood as ancient in Thailand. Like ancient Tae Pae gate ( a part of city walls) in Chiang Mai that was actually built from the scratch using new bricks in 1980s. Moreover this pile of bricks is sacred and damage or even attempt to climb it is punishable, as it is ancient. ????  go figure.

Thais have demanded the return of STOLEN and unlawfully removed artefacts

How do you know they were stolen?  No mention of it in the quoted article.  Link please.

Yep, but no one is calling out the thieves who stole and sold them in the first place. You just can't do that with Poo-Yais in this country. However stealing artifacts, selling them, then getting them back free. That's a winner.  ????

There was already a link posted above more than 12 hours before your comment. The link makes it clear that these items were stolen and smuggled out of the country and that Thailand has been trying to get them returned for some time.

Of course! It belongs to Thailand? Demanded is the right and appropriate word. It is because of comments like yours and westerners like you, bitter and resentful of the fact that Thais have demanded the return of STOLEN and unlawfully removed artefacts, instead of kowtowing and pleading humbly to "please return our stolen property" that we Asians feel strongly about such an entitled attitude!

If you steal, demanding back what you stole is categorically correct. Thieves do not deserve the flowery politeness your comment seems to shamelessly imply.

Perhaps Thailand should return the jewels it stole too.  I am sure the Saudi's demanded them back.

There is a treaty from 1970 governing the return of pieces looted from archeological sites. Some lintels were stolen in 1967 and finally returned from a US museum in the 1980s.

Surely these are Khmer artifacts anyway and not Thai, they are 1000 years old, maybe should be returned to Cambodia then.

There are Khmer sites as far West as Kanchanaburi, so hardly related to present day Cambodia.

If the people who borrowed them were decent people, they would have returned them 4 years ago.
