BANGKOK (Reuters) - Thailand's parliament on Wednesday passed by a narrow margin the first reading of a 3.1 trillion baht ($99.7 billion) budget bill for the 2022 fiscal year starting Oct. 1, aimed at reviving an economy hit by coronavirus outbreaks.

Thailand’s Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha explained today (Wednesday) to MPs, particularly those of the coalition Bhumjaithai Party, that he diverted Public Health Ministry funding, for the procurement and management of COVID-19 vaccines, to the Central Fund, which is under his direct supervision, for ease of use in emergency.

The US government has provided $30 million in COVID-related assistance to Thailand, as a part of their commitment to help the country fight the pandemic, according to the US Embassy in Bangkok during a visit by the US Deputy Secretary of State Wendy Sherman.
