Various governments have urged caution on their vaccinated citizens ,  but some people just can't help themselves. There are still some that believe things can go back to exactly as they were before covid.  I think that kind of normality is a long way off yet.

In some developed rich countries pension has been deferred to 67 and there is serious discussion to push it to 70. The argument being underpinned by the medically induced life expectancy growth. This is really tantamount to abolishing pension. If you have to wait to 70 to get a pension, what kind of pension is that?

 

Not sure this will cause a geriatric crime spree, poverty is wide-spread in Thailand, much greater than in Western nations, but there is no crime spree. Maybe the developed countries' older population will just resign themselves to later and later, lower and lower pension? A complete abolishing would be political suicide. So it is being done by stealth anyway.

The control freaks are IMO lovin' the prospect of years and years of telling people what to do.

Politicians should remember that if they treat old people too badly we are or will be a majority of voters in countries with a low birth rate.

That could be why some politicians welcome potential voters that arrive without going through the legal channels.

That's fine if people start work knowing they have to save for the future. I was brought up being told that the government would always look after me like they looked after my parents.

 

Many current pensioners in NZ are OK because they had a house to sell at a capital gain. However, given that home ownership is becoming out of reach for all but the rich now, that will not apply in the future.

Yes, the voting power of the older population is organized and well recognised by political parties. That is probably why pensions have been untouched for so long when it has been clear for decades that they are unsustainable.

 

People have linked the arrival of immigrants to various agendas, including propping up pension and compensating for low birth rate, but I doubt politicians have that kind of vision. Why do they allow the influx? They probably have no other choice, letting people drown on the high seas or letting smaller neighbours handle all of them is just not viable.
