Todays Tesco experience

Dropped the girlfriend off at her shop, went for coffee then into Tesco for some items and then off to the checkout. Chose the checkout with two middle aged Thai ladies about to put their few goodies onto the conveyor belt which was probably my biggest mistake this year. They didn’t stop gabbling to each other one at one end of the conveyor and the other where you load your shopping into your bag or whatever. All their goodies now checked off but no attempt yet to put them anywhere while the one nearest me browses the items by the checkout and literally after about 5 minutes decides she doesn’t want any. Now they decide to pay but the shopping is still where the checkout girl put it, they get their change and then just stand there still gabbling. The checkout girl starts on my purchases but cannot put them anywhere at the moment as the two ladies are totally oblivious to anything else so she scans them and hands them back to me one by one. I then pay and now the two ladies actually start to pick up their goodies but I’m now finished and cannot get past them so with a big beaming smile and a ‘khor tort’ I politely push their trolley about 5 yards away from them and walk past. Should have seen the smiles on the now lengthy queue behind me.

Actually JWRC I did but it was also about the only way I could see the next person behind me getting on with their day.

I usually get behind a market stall holder, who decides to pay with a wad of 20 Thb notes ,at Makro , or in Big C ,who has all the discount vouchers on their phone, and takes forever flipping through the phone to find them. ????.

I know it’s now Lotus’s but to people like me who’ve been here many years it will always be Tesco and if it had become a Big C we would still refer to it as the old Tesco.

How about a GRAB driver who drives right past, nobody else around,

stops 5  meters away and calls me on my mobile.

I sometimes feel I am invisible. Or maybe they don't look out ?

The worst is Tops when they have some kind of promotion with either coupons or where shoppers need to scan some code and show a return code to the cashier on their phone....half cannot seem to use the phone so the cashier has to grab it from them and do it for them and the other half start disputing the amount of the dicsount and then instruct the cashier to remove certain items from the checkout (already checked out) that they thought were discounted....causing the necessity for a supervisor with the key to void the item. ...just buy your stuff and pay with cash people...it's a simpler world.

why do women never get their purse out until all the items have been rung up? then fumble about for the cash, or more often a time consuming card. I have the money in hand before the check out starts. I avoid Tops after they started having to stick paid for labels on everything, and then sign them!

The one that gets me is in Tescos where you get a discount of (say) 50฿ on 600฿.

You might have goods of about 2000฿ in the trolley. You give your clubcard number but they don't ring-up ALL your shopping, they ring-up 600฿, apply the discount and start the process again. For 2000฿ of shopping, that's 4 separate till receipts. Why not just ring-up the lot, apply the discount of 3x50฿ and make it a single transaction?

When I'm with Mrs. L and this happens, I find myself thinking "F*** the discount. Can't we just get out of here!". I hate shopping.

Next time make sure your zipper is up Mr Holmes.

and then there are those that remember in the mid-1990's when it was simply Lotus, before Tesco's takeover post-1997 Asian Financial Crisis prompting the name change to Tesco Lotus.

They do this on purpose. It’s blatantly obvious just walking around Thailand. I suppose it’s flattering tbh.

Especially the Tops supermarkets are known for this kind of annoyance because they have so many different coupons for almost every item plus general cash vouchers. It's even worse when the person in front of you starts paying the utility bills in addition to the purchase. Checking out at Tops often takes forever.

But the most annoying checkout process for me is the one at Makro. That's because their printers don't start printing until the whole process is complete. They don't print during the scanning process, but wait until the payment is made. So after the person in front of you has already paid, the printer starts printing the receipt and everyone has to wait for the printing to finish before a new scan can be started. Because their printers are incredibly slow, in some cases the printing process can take as long as the scanning process itself. This is highly inefficient because we customers have to wait forever and the cashiers spend up to almost half of their work time doing nothing but waiting for the receipts to print.

Printing the receipts while scanning would speed up the process tremendously, which would not only be better for us customers, but also for the store itself (the cashiers' work time would be used much more efficiently).

I really don't understand why they still do it the way they are doing it.

Why do you need to go with her?

There's a old guy here in our moo ban with one of those old Lotus signs with the old logo and font, strapped to the side of his saleng. He's hoping those good ol' days will one day be back.

If you can see they are that type, move them on. Eye contact, walking towards them with a smile usually does it. The grannies look at me like I'm the rude one but I don't really care.

I was behind a bloke in Tesco one time who had about 20 boxes of Brands in his trolley. They were on offer with a coupon but only one per customer. He produced 20 coupons and 20 Tesco cards and the cashier processed them as 20 different purchases taking money and giving change for each box.

I never go shopping with the long haired one, on the odd times she's caught me sneaking out,  the trolley will be full of anything but food by her,  face creams, lotions,  wierd soaps,  alright the creams for me, but she will add another 1000 baht on the bill.

It's that young actor, half Thai/half farang. He loves pushing that stuff. Says it energizes you and gives you the power to get through the day. I don't know about that, but it's certainly selling.

As long as the sign outside says Tesco Lotus then that's what it is ????  I have seen one - one - item in there with the new name though.

Recently went to the Makro that does not sell alcohol. Large purchase. whipped out the visa and was told-"we only take Citi." fortunately I had enough cash on hand.

New in town. But now I know

A bit further down the aisle she puts a 1000bht tub of face cream in the trolley, I put it back saying, "That's expensive, we don't need that". She complains, "But teerak, that face cream will make me more attractive for you", I walk back down to the beer, put the cans back on the trolley and say, "The beer will do the same, and costs half the price!"

You can pay by asking to scan with your banks phone app.

I have seen somebody in front of me leaving her things at the checkout desk to go and get something I presume she forgot. I immediately put her things out of the way and put my things in their place, then asked the girl to attend to my items,  then she carried on serving me.

Thanks for the amusing, not-about-vaccines' post.

I would have just said 'kho tort, krap' a lot sooner. You were way too polite. I can't see the Thai ladies wating patiently behind you if it was the other way about ????

Don't hear "Carrafour" much concerning Big C Extra here in Chiang Mai.

I had exactly the same experience a couple years ago. Patience in the face of stupidity is not one of my strengths. After putting up with that sh*t for long enough I exploded and the culprits scrambled to complete their payment. The cashier seemed to appreciate it as she couldn't do anything about that sh*t.
