Following a strategy board meeting at the Tourism Authority of Thailand yesterday media Thai Rath published the figures for three scenarios predicting 2022 tourism outcomes. 

 

They relate to spending and actual numbers of foreign tourists and domestic tourism trips. The numbers even in the worst case scenario are dizzying.

 

Thai Rath said they would be officially announced in the middle of August to help tourism operators in Thailand come up with business plans. 

 

The media stated that these figures would place Thailand firmly back in the top five of tourism countries in the world. 

 

Here are the three scenarios that the TAT have come up with:

 

Best Case:

 

Total revenue of 1.9 TRILLION baht (1,900,000,000,000)

 

Foreign tourist number: 18 million

spending 1.05 trillion baht

 

Domestic tourists 160 million people - trips spending 850 billion baht.

 

Base Case

 

Total revenue of 1.6 trillion baht

 

Foreign tourist numbers 13 million

spending 820 billion baht

 

Domestic tourists 140 million people-trips spending 780 billion

 

Worse Case:

 

Total revenue of 1.3 trillion baht

 

Foreign tourists numbers 10 million spending 620 billion baht

 

Domestic tourists 122 million people -trips spending 680 billion baht. 

 

All this will be achieved under the strategy umbrellas of Muang Thai Amazing for domestic tourism and Amazing Thailand for foreign tourism.

 

The Muang Thai Amazing's three pronged strategy is stimulating balanced domestic travel, driving spending by creating travel experiences and developing the value of the Thai brand to be equivalent to the value of foreign tourism. 

 

Amazing Thailand's three pronged strategy entails stimulating travel by QUALITY TOURISTS, enhancing the value of travel experiences and reinforcing confidence in the value of the Thai tourism brand. 

 

ASEAN NOW notes that these assessments are likely to produce a flurry of comment from onliners who might suggest they are all overly optimistic in a world still likely to be affected deeply by the pandemic or its fallout.

But, in reality, (because these figures are delusional), they would be lucky to be in the top five of tourism countries in South East Asia !

When are the "schemes" coming.

These presentations must be like going to church.  Gives them a break from reality makes them smile and feel good and positive for an hour or two.

Predicting is difficult, especially about the future, but since I was allowed to peek into another member's valuable antique crystal ball, I got the impression that TAT's "worse case" scenario for 2022 is the most reliable of the three options...????

Sad but despite Thailand having the potential to be in the top five, it would require too much of a cultural shift in attitude to tourists, who, in the main are just fair game for greed and dishonesty as demonstrated in Phuket over decades.

 

Greed and corruption spoils it all, at all levels.

Maybe they are introducing new and exciting types of tourism. The Tear Gas Experience? Surprise hospital quarantine roulette? Economic Apocalypse now zombie town walks? Masochist tourism for people who really like a lot of covid tests every other day? AA Sober holidays with alcohol bans?

Idiots.....

Worst case, only the military and elites get a decent vaccine while Thai people continue to contract covid at a rate of 20,000 per day. No tourists come because they have read all about the sandbox and Prawith has to sell a couple of watches.

Simple. Adopt IATA travel pass app and OPEN THE COUNTRY to vaccinated tourists.

No certificate of entry, No redonkulous insurance requirements, and no more locking up

people in hospital for no good reason. Tourists will come and slowly rebuild the industry but 

no way Thailand can be in such a  revenue position for many years. 

We're still working our way through the Delta variant, have they taken into account the effects of the Epsilon and Lambda variants in these forecasts? Maybe in 2032, TAT, but definitely not next year, poor lambs.

The only way that Thailand will hit the 'worst case' scenario, will be if thailand opens up fully on January 1st, with no hoops and no demands. Q1 -1 million, Q2- 2 million, Q3-3 million, Q4- 4 million.

 

The Chinese will not be coming for the new year, I think 3 million Westerners and Russians may come without hoops 1st half of the year, but many tourists will be slow out of the tourism starting blocks, fearing another lockdown.

 

With continuing hoops they need to start looking at a 'Worst, worst case' scenario of 2-5 million max
