Transport Ministry set to enhance skills for seafarers

BANGKOK (NNT) - Shipping has always been at the core of the manufacturing sector, with the maritime sector playing a crucial role in international trade. The Ministry of Transport is now aimimg to build on the knowledge and skills of seafarers, to enhance the sector’s quality of operations in line with international standards.

 

The Minister of Transport Saksayam Chidchob, today presided over the opening of a World Maritime Day event held by the Marine Department on the theme Seafarers: at the Core of Shipping’s Future.

 

As a member of the International Maritime Association, Thailand has always recognized the importance of seafarers, especially as the world is hit by the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

To help affected seafarers, the Ministry of Transport has been rolling out policy and measures of assistance, from crew rotation, to crew repatriation, along with assistance in other areas.

 

In addition, the Ministry of Transport has established the Maritime Safety and Surveillance Operations Center serving Thai-registered vessels on international missions. The center provides 24-hour monitoring of the vessels, and helps ensure the safety at various ports.

 

The establishment of this center helps enhance Thailand’s capabilities in regulating and providing security protection for water transport and merchant marine operations.

 

Now changes have been made to the applicable laws and regulations, including a standardize training and certification program in accordance with the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers. This is to ensure Thai seafarers are capable of operating with the knowledge and skills needed, in line with international standards.

Does that encompass tug boat operators?

So an admission to a historical fail, eg., with International Convention. So 7 years of inattention by the Prayut regime ? Wash, rinse and recycle.

Maybe a more effective and proactive leadership is needed.

Ah, so finally Thailand has realized in the outside world there is something called STCW Convention which most developed countries have been obliged to comply with for a LONG time !!

Maybe they could build knowledge and skills to drivers as well, nah wont happen.

The Ministry of Transport has done so well with road safety and ensuring every vehicle driver has a valid DL ... Or have they given up on drivers all together now?
