Police in Udon Thani in Thailand's north east have promised justice after a Thai man was killed by a Swiss pensioner at the foreigner's house.

The Thai man scaled a wall and demanded money and a fight broke out after he pulled a gun.

The pensioner hit him in the head then tied him up before the police were called. But the intruder had died.

It was the early hours of Sunday when Pol Capt Sukin Rajankaew of the Nakha police went to a house one kilometer from the village in Moo 4 Ban Khamin in Kutsa sub-district.

There the police and rescue services found 53 year old Sathian dead in a kitchen behind the house. He had cheek and eyebrow cuts and bruises and had his hands and feet bound.

He was taken for an autopsy at Soon Udon Thani Hospital.

Waiting to surrender himself at the scene was Rudolf J.R., 63, the Swiss houseowner.

He admitted knocking out the victim but denied intending to kill him.

He said that late Saturday night he had been having a coffee in his kitchen. His wife had been out drinking with friends and had come home and gone to bed.

The intruder scaled a concrete wall and was armed with a gun which he pointed at him demanding "money, money", reported Daily News.

A struggle ensued as the Swiss man said he grabbed the intruder's arm and the gun went off but it didn't hit anyone.

Rudolf said he threw it in the pond next to the house.

In the furious fight fists and feet were used to attack the intruder who was knocked unconscious.

Worried that he would regain consciousness the foreigner tied him up, woke up his wife and got her to contact the phu yai ban to inform the police.

However, when the phu yai ban arrived Sathian was already dead.

Lak, 44, the  Swiss man's wife, said that she and her husband had been married for ten years and lived off his retirement fund. He used to be an architect.

They had no trouble with anyone and no enemies, she said.

She admitted to being someone who liked to go out and party with friends. Two years ago she said she met Sathian, a general employee and farmer, who was a friend of a friend.

She said that he tried to initiate a relationship with her but she declined his advances. She would meet him in the village and say hello, that was all.

She never thought he would try to rob them and it would come to this.

Rudolf was taken away to the police station along with a .38 revolver that was found in the pond.

It contained 5 rounds in the chamber, one had been fired.

Pol Maj-Gen Phisanu Unhaseri said there were two cases - the first involved trespass at night with a gun and attempted murder against the victim.

The second is that the foreigner will face charges of inflicting bodily harm causing death.

Whether it was self-defence will be taken into consideration, said the provincial police chief promising "justice for both sides".

He said there would be a full investigation.

More on this as we hear of developments in the case.

Was it a case of robbery as stated or a jealous husband?

If this Swiss man is charged with any offence at all, the Thais can kiss goodbye to attracting the high rolling Foreign people that they are so desperately seeking.

The potential 1 Million or so Digital Nomads Etc Etc Etc, will just say " <deleted> that, if I cannot defend myself , and what is mine, without prosecution."

when you are attacked in your own home with a gun weilding robber you are entitled to defend yourself, in any other country it would be recognised as self defence, if a thai had done it, it would also be looked at as self defence but because a farang that was 10 years older than the robber did it he is being charged, really shows the anti farang views/laws they have here.

Standard procedure in a death, and as stated, under investigation if self defense.  Police of course have the option for discretion to charge right away or investigate more before charging.  Apparently the chose the former, possibly for a reason.

If going to court, judge will rule as sees fit, dismiss,  guilty or not, w/no sentence, fine and or compensation to family of deceased.

It appears justice has already been served.

It has to be investigated . None of us know who is telling the truth yet .

I'll believe that when I see it!  So often after the headline story we hear nothing more, which is so infuriating! :-)

Seriously, prospective tourists read Thai newspapers before booking a trip to Udon?

An investigation is needed. For all we know the burglar and wife could have been in cahoots?

Royal thai police arrest swiss farrang making selfdefence in his own house.

So now we can not defend our self in our own houses against armed thai robbers.

The farrang only did a good job, helped Thailand free of a armed thai killer/robber.

If they want him to jail for that, farrangs can not believe in any justice in LOS.

what ?

The Thai was armed with a firearm and made an unauthorised entry to the property to commit armed robbery and discharged the firearm when challenged, he was then disarmed during a violent struggle and incapacitated - the Swiss man should be getting a medal

pretty clear to me

There is nothing clear here. The wife said so "he tried to initiate a relationship with her but she declined his advances. She would meet him in the village and say hello, that was all."

clear as mud.  All of those things are assumptions at this point as there were no witnesses.  Its only the Swiss mates version

Thai wife ran out of gambling / party money and hatched a plan with the deceased to rob her husband, the Swiss guy.

Just shows how quick your life can change here.

Now, lawyers, police, and the deceased's family will be the benefactors of the Swiss guy's retirement fund.

What would happened to a Thai intruder with a loaded gun breaking into a Thai policeman's house? The Thai intruder would be shot dead with no questions asked. As it should be

The swiss guy must be a expert in close combat....

Sounds like a clear case of self-defense from the facts presented so far. Also I suspect the wife may have helped plan the attempted robbery as her statement seems suspicious and she also knew the dead man.

So in your view,  one person's word is all that is needed is it?  I don't think so.  Why throw the gun in the pond, odd that.  Why tie up the man if he is unconscious, odd that.  What is the relationship between the man and the wife all about, odd that.  Lots of unanswered questions here.

They are not 'facts',  they are one person's version of what happened.

She was madly in love with the Thai victim, gone out for the night as part of the plot to rub out her husband and then claim his estate.

The Thai guy cocked up big style.

OR

The Swiss guy found out about his wife's lover, lured the Thai guy into the house and setup the whole thing up to look like a break-in gone wrong.

OR

The Swiss guy could just be telling the truth!!!

Would it matter why an individual scaled a wall, discharged a gun in an assault. The Swiss is defending him self regardless of WHY the guy climbed over the wall.
