Richard Burton, Richard Harris, and Peter O'Toole

Richard Burton and Peter O'Toole - 2 overly theatrical awful actors.

Take a look at "The Bramble Bush" - Burton's scenes with Angie Dickinson are a joke - he's a stolid immobile rock while she acts rings around him.

He got the costar he deserved in several films - Elizabeth Taylor - another ridiculous stiff.

In "Cleopatra" and "The Comedians", they give a masterclass in bad lifeless acting.

Richard Harris could be overly theatrical also, but in "Unforgiven" and even more so in "The Field" he is miles beyond Burton and O'Toole.

"Unforgiven" is a film which is beyond anything ever projected on the silver screen, of its genre.  And, it is even beyond being classified into any particular genre. Nothing similar to this film had ever been seen, nor will ever be seen, until kingdom come.  Amazing circumstance of everything happening well, from the beginning until the end.

Unforgiven is an unforgettable film, from beginning to end.

Somebody had to say it ! Contrived attempts at some sort of strange intellectual discourse are initially tempting to read but result in ............

It certainly is an unforgettable film, especially if you, like me, have never seen it.

One worries if anyone cares.

At least, Burton, Harris, O'Toole were productive, in many amazing ways.

Fortunately, they did not get too strung out on crystal meth, or Smack.

A drug is a drug. There are drug bores whether they are boozers, hop heads, speed freaks or whatever. These three were famous loud mouthed bores. Their behavior was tolerated because they were posh and also had status as 'actors' but this forgiving attitude just served to cover their self destructive sickness and led to their early deaths.

Self-destructive behavior becomes less important by age 80.

What is the difference between living another 10 years, after age 80?

Loss of eyesight, and dementia.

Maybe you think you will be forever young?

The older I get, I know that Heaven can't wait, forever.

Don't take life so SERIOUSLY, Man!

Do you really want to live forever?

Yeah, maybe you are right.

Maybe we should just cancel Winehouse...?

IF you cancel all the "boozers, hop heads, speed freaks or whatever", then you will become a very lonely person with very little to do or read.  Edgar A Poe was a hop head, so you might as well cancel him. Much of literature was written by freaks, so cancel this too.  Not to mention Sherlock Holmes who did his best sleuthing while spurred on by a bit of opium.

Of course, you are correct....psychoactive drugs do harm, and no good, in most cases.  Still, just because one is addicted to drugs, or ethanol, for a long time or a short time, this does not mean that one should shoot them up to Saturn to be banished there like Vonnegut.

Have a bit of compassion for these artists who are, after all, only Human.

There is really nothing contrived here.  Far from it, because most of what is being posted here is obviously fairly spontaneous.

If you are initially tempted to read, then please do not feel that you are not welcome to read what is posted here, spontaneously.

And, no doubt, if you are looking for an intellectual discussion, then this is not the purpose of this topic, as far as anybody knows.

You forgot Ollie Reed.

All of this – and the exploits of Oliver Reed, the only non- Celt among the four – is revealed in a new book called Hellraisers: The Life and Inebriated Times of Richard Burton, Peter O'Toole, Richard Harris and Oliver Reed.

Oliver Reed was a hellraiser for sure. Are you aware he chose to be buried in county cork Ireland?

The home of blarney castle and kissing the blarney stone.

Albert Finney!

Sorry for being slightly off topic, but I really want to know.

In his early years, and even in his later years, seems Albert Finney was quite an amazing actor.

What do you think?

Under the Volcano:

Amazing Film.

Finney was Amazing in this, I always thought.

Maybe most of you will not agree with me.

That's OK, with me.

Drunkard Anglo types.

This is what they are truly famed for.

I like your reply.

Not sure how accurate it might be, however.

Everybody (or at least somebody) loves Beethoven.

Yet, Beethoven was NOT a very nice person.

Learn to separate your love of art from your dislike of the artist, maybe.

Rather inaccurate. They were excellent actors in their own right.

Hmmm....

Perspectives and opinions will vary, of course.

Wondering of their thespian skills would've suffered if they weren't down-in-the gutter drunkards? Guess we'll never know.

Great actors and raconteurs. O'Toole in Lawrence of Arabia is one of the screen's greatest performances. Burton was great in some of his less popular films, such as The Spy Who Came in From the Cold and The Comedians (with Elizabeth Taylor, Peter Ustinov, Alec Guinness, Roscoe Lee Brown).

Burton was one of two of the best guests on talk shows, the other being Orson Welles.

Welles just blurted out an interesting quip once that blew right past Dick Cavett...."Ignorance: there's no authority in the world like it".
