webfact
Thailand’s Senate has overwhelmingly rejected the nomination of a representative of Thailand’s ethnic minorities as a member of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). Wiwat Tamee, the director of a foundation for the development of ethnic minority groups, was nominated by the selection committee, from pool of 20 candidates who were interviewed by the committee on June 25th about their views and visions related to human rights issues in Thailand. Two-thirds of the committee members voted for Wiwat. He failed, however, to receive Senate approval today (Monday). Popular Post ThailandRyan
What a shame. Guess they are afraid he will help make changes for the good. The senate are all puppets anyway. 6
Popular Post jacko45k
How ironic... a vote to retain discrimination and subjugation.
Popular Post Gandtee
Human rights in Thailand is an oxymoron which the senate have confirmed. Surely a member from one of the ethnic communities has more knowledge of the abuse of human rights than those brainwashed, nationalistic military men in the senate and government. 13
Popular Post Srikcir
The rejection hardly matters. The NHRC has been made impotent by the Prayut regime since 2014 and even rejected by the UN HRC. Wiwat can be more effective outside of Thailand's NHRC, albeit his nomination rejection does show the farcical utility of the NHRC that might have more impact outside of Thailand.

Which exactly why he didn't get voted in. Thailand 2021 or is it still 1821? 6

ArcticFox
Lord only knows that Thailand would never want to have a representative of oppressed minorities actually having a voice in policy making. That would be opening a can of worms. Just another example of how institutional racism rules the roost. Thais need to protect the purity of national bloodlines. To hell with all 'outsiders.' spidermike007
There is something fundamentally oxymoronic about Thailand even having a human rights commission. Does anyone think they actually do good work for the minority communities, and truly represent those who have been trafficked and brought here by slave traders? It is likely that the guilty parties are above the law. So, why the pretense? Of course they rejected this minority representative, after going through the charade of the selection process. He might have asked them to do some actual work and face some of the issues. God forbid that happens.
Andycoops
The senate are just puppets of the Muppets and it would seem eminently racist.
