I like Indians. Affable, polite, approachable, excellent English skills. Many cultural and spiritual harmonies with Thailand. An increase in Indian tourism would also provide a much needed counter weight to Thailand's mad embrace of all things Chinese.

By "quality tourists" one assumes they mean people with lots of money to spend, and yet their stated targets of young people and Indians do not, with a few exceptions, have bags of cash to throw around. And why would any normal person, young or Indian, want to take a holiday in a country where you can't go out for a drink, or even have a glass of wine with your meal in most places? On top of which, it now seems that you face huge bills if you test positive on arrival. They're not targeting "quality tourists" this way, they're targeting the insane, lol!

They should check who is the big spenders in Thailand. They are definitely not any asian you country. Midlle East and Scandinavia are the homes of the big spenders in Thailand according to statistics.

 

Head line says Thailand to target quality and first time tourists, followed by story line explaining to target Indians.

Come on, let's be totally honest. It's a case of supply and demand. It doesn't matter what the government want, the Thais will supply what the tourists want and we all know what that is. 

At this point one would think if the economy has been hurt, money is money from anyone.  Better something than nothing and not limiting your resources.

There is no doubt there are some nice foreign built hotels here but step outside into the filth and garbage and it's a whole different picture from the marble floors of the hotel

 

I have fond memories of the pristine holiday destination in Spain Portugal Greece Italy and generally around the med - you could eat off the footpaths and general infrastructure it is so clean and engineered - absolutely spotless and not a tile out of place 

 

Thailand has had huge tourism income for decades and what did they do with it ?  - stuff it in their greedy corrupt pockets instead of spending it on infrastructure - they only have themselves to blame for the mess

The way things are at the moment, they should welcome anyone who is willing to come to Thailand especially with all the extra requirements & not to mention the Thailand Pass.......

I think, as so often happen with policies here, they’re approaching this from the wrong direction. 

 

Anyone who has foreign money to spend should be encouraged. The more the merrier. What is really needed is a policy which obstructs ‘begpackers.’ After all, not only do they not contribute, they are the ones most likely to actually cost the country if something unforeseen and unprepared for happens. I’m sorry you students on gap years, but if I had my way, you’d have to wait until you can properly afford it before you jet off here.

 

From a purely selfish perspective, I’d ban all tourists. I’m happy to see a strong $/€/£ against the ฿.

As long as Thailand considers that it is doing the holiday visitors a favour by letting them come there, then their tourism will decline.

I rather like Indians. They are certainly more polite than Han Chinese. True, they are notoriously cheap, but I would prefer them to the wealthy elites that the Thai government is trying to attract.
