New Thai education law will kill kids’ creativity, warn critics

It has long been recognised that the true purpose of education is to socialise pupils, education is a by product of this process. Hence the old classic song 'Brick in the Wall' by Pink Floyd released in 1979

Historically, the truer purpose is directed for mass control and indoctrination. This practice has been omnipresent worldwide forever.

Maybe  the Thai education authorities should study education in Finland :

https://leverageedu.com/blog/finland-education-system/

Not sure about that ericbj...I went to that 'official' site and it says one of the primary languages in the Country is EGLISH...yes, that's right, no 'N'......typo maybe, but c'mon...that should have been seen and sorted by the educationalists!  It's pretty clumsy of them.  I'll read some more to see if they've got it together....I had my career in International Education so have heard what they offer is good. Not been to Finland just S E Asia and Middle East.

In our contemporary era, courses in Mandarin would seem to be much more practical. ????

The future appears to be directed in this manner. ????

My neighbours'  13 year old daughter is learning Mandarin. My 17 year old son sadly is stuck with Thai and English.

I wonder how easy S Korean would be to learn. TBH there isn't any prospect of decent work out here in rural Kamphaeng Phet.

Creativity is the antithesis of conservative-ism.  Tradition and customs is where it's at presently.  Change is bad, unless changing back the way things were previously.  Creativity leads to free thinking and anarchy.

A back to the future initiative: aim for the 18th century but settle for the 19th.

In some countries various conservative politicians have different target eras: some want to go back 50 years, or 150 years, but will be happy with 10 years.  Or maybe even last week.  There's a guy in the US who has tried to run for president a few times who apparently wants to go back to the time of the Crusades.

Were Stalin, Mao, Ho Chi Minh creative?  They did not hark back to previous periods but forged ahead in newer and more violent repressive measures.  Unless you think that Ho's order to execute 10% of the population by burning them in their houses or burying them alive rather than shooting tem is being creative.

Let us hope that Thailand does not give way as the USA has done and Europe seems to be doing to the equivalent of anti-white racism and cancelling anyone who does not espouse the views of the extreme left such as by maintaining that only women have cervixes.

by setting an higher standard the teachers will drop out and replace by better teachers.

in every country we have state education even in the west.

But where are these teachers going to come from? Is the Ministry of Education prepared to pay way more than they currently do, and if not how do they intend to attract top talent?

This problem is not unique to Thailand and is well known in certain professional circles in the West also. Specifically, the majority of top talent entering the workforce out of college head to careers in finance and tech. Engineering, management consulting, administration, medicine, and law suck up most of the rest.

Teaching never even hits the radar, and there's no easy fix. I assume it's much the same in Thailand. Would welcome creative ideas for fixing the issue tho.

Two key education bills have sailed through the first reading in the House of Representatives, despite warnings that both will seriously damage the quality of Thai education.

They must be kidding. There's nothing to damage. The so called education system  can't get worse.

The present thai elementary school system is a mess. A 12 years old girl can not read a simple text. She is not alone, a mass of students no ability to write and read. Their skills of math is lower. Any change can make it better. They are at the bottom now.

Realistically speaking, can education get any worse in Thailand? When students are not allowed to question their teachers, who are pathologically afraid of losing face, how will the kids learn and keep open minds and get the creative juices flowing?

Rather than so called reform, it would be better to admit total failure, and rebuild the system from scratch, using outside help, from the top rated nations in the world for education.

Unless they are simply trying to avoid reform, and a creative and vibrant youth. That is more likely. The army is despised like never before, despite their attempts to oppress.

When my kid started pre school in Thailand he knew the English and thai alphabet by the time he started primary school back in Nz he knew neither

A faster moving revolution should be in order.

A complete cleansing.

hahahahahahhahahahhahahh.

A Thai asking for outside help.  That is the funnies thing I have ever heard.

Millions of Native speaking English visitors combined with expats and NO ONE asks them to review street or building signs because they speak "good enough English" to translate.

True.....my Isan wife left school for work at 11 years old......leaving her 'uneducated', though still intelligent (clever enough to marry me).

She speaks four languages.

My Issan wife left school after completing primary, then went to BKK to work in factories, then hotels and restaurants. It was over the course of a few years there that she picked up English, much better than she could've done in school. Now I teach adults online, mostly Chinese, Japanese, South American, and they love hearing this story, gives them hope and motivation.

With just the right exposure to the language, and creating the motivation, it can be done. These unfortunately are lacking in the Thai school system.

My students ask me, don't they learn English in Thailand? I said oh yeah, from kindergarten they get ABC's, nursery rhymes, greetings. Why don't they learn then? I tell them there's just a general lack of interest, on the part of both students and teachers.

I taught English at a municipal school, and was occasionally asked to go down to the thesaban (municipal office) to help with translations. Most often there'd be complaint letters from farangs, usually noise complaints, as they were near bars and parks with performances. Heh. I wrote them some amusing replies, mostly to the effect of "you're in Thailand now, mate".

They wanted to double check my responses by translating them into Thai. I later found they were rewriting them, infusing them with more of their bad English, and removing most of my charming wit. ????

From what I know the young girls at school has a standard haircut  style and uniform.the boys similar too.So a  rule change who knows what happens

Though, the standard China Doll style for girls has somewhat been mitigated over the recent years - a growing number of high-schoolers, and even middle school aged, will be found wearing [and encouraged] whatever style they wish.......and nothing is said from the school authorities/officialdom.
