Just heard on the afternoon NHK news that Japan has 2 cases now, but they are mild, and that in many locations where it has been found so far it is very mild with the symptoms.  Still has required some hospitalization, but as fast as they say it is moving they are only concerned with serious cases clogging up the hospitals.  Still have a little while to wait and see where this goes.  Just heard the US has also changed its entry requirements to having arriving travelers be PCR negative tested just one day before arrival.  Looks like rapid PCR tests will be soon abounding.

How fast can a PCR test be done and the results be returned here?  Last time I tested it took 48 hours.  I know they have kicked up testing ability but where can one go for a test that gets the results back in around 12 hours.

Today's numbers, yesterday's numbers, day before, day before that... so similar I have to check the dates. Guess that's good though.

Really hoping Omicron is less severe & vaccines still offer some protection. We'll soon find out.

Hopefully the hysterics will die down soon……..but I doubt it:

Check out Medex.  They can do in 12 hours and in some cases 3 hours.

Muscle pain, fatigue among initial symptoms of Omicron variant – DCD

Thailand’s Disease Control Department has published basic information about the new coronavirus variant, Omicron, so the public can monitor for physical symptoms. The initial symptoms include muscle pain and fatigue, but not serious, and the patients do not lose their sense of smell or taste, as in the case of infection by other variants.

Best hurry up and get all those people jabbed then, still lots of Provinces with very low vaccination rates, all very well talking about boosters for those who need them but some are still clambering for first shots. Even here in Phuket there's been massive queues for people getting first shots yesterday.

I guess it’s testament to how well Thailand is currently doing that this thread about new Covid cases, deaths and recoveries is now reporting on an isolated Omicron case in Malaysia as there is nothing here to get excited about.

Well done Thailand (so far).

Thailand is doing well.

Numbers from the last 7 days show a reduction of 15% in new cases, a 19% drop in deaths and a low of 4 deaths/million of population.

Once again, well done Thailand. Zero Omicron cases so far Let’s all hope they keep it up.

SOCIAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT OF COVID-19 IN THAILAND - UNICEF

Thanks, some reading for when I have some time, its 180 pages long! The opening page introduction:

Highlights

Thailand is facing severe socio-economic effects of the global COVID-19 pandemic. It is clear that the most vulnerable population have been hit the hardest and the cross-sectoral impacts will have long-term consequences on the country’s  social and economic development for many years to come,  including on the progress made against the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
