Omicron Will Arrive, Vaccination Urged – Official

BANGKOK, Dec 3 (TNA) – The Omicron variant of COVID-19 will definitely enter Thailand and measures can only delay its arrival, warned a health advisor who called for quick inoculation for 10 million unvaccinated people in the country.

Dr. Tawee Chotepitayasunon, advisor to the Department of Disease Control and the Department of Medical Services, said that the Omicron variant had been detected overseas a few months ago and was spreading. Finally it would reach Thailand, he predicted.

Existing measures including entry denial for people from southern Africa would only delay its arrival. In the meantime, Thailand would have to speed up vaccination for the 10 million people who had not been inoculated to reduce the impacts of outbreaks, Dr. Tawee said.

There's probably already been a few thousand cases circulate through

Certainly in Thailand already.  It has nothing to do with lack of managing this.  You cannot stop a virus, and what everyone did already when they found out about it is already too late.

If they don't find them for another 10 days they will all be recovered by then....hence no infections.

I think he might be referring to the samples in October from Nigeria.

First articles mentioned it was omicron detected in October but later it was corrected to delta.

The stark choice is between some death - mostly of unvaccinated, lifestyle unhealthy people and those 90 and above  - or even more total destruction of the economies of the world. The trade off with  non-covd deaths and starvation is not worth it.

As a slightly unhealthy person, even I still vote open up and live with it.

Vaccinate , mask up, test where necessary, wash your hands, and get on with life

Another invented scare the world is taking to heart....

Omicron must already be in Thailand. How it behaves against a different vaccine/immunity profile here will be seen quite quickly. Europe too faces the same uncertainty. Reports that symptoms may be milder have yet to be confirmed. As ever, get the vax and the 'boost' asap . . .

"South Africa’s daily confirmed Covid-19 cases almost quadrupled from Tuesday as the omicron variant spreads across the country, showing how contagious the new strain may be.

The country recorded 16,055 infections in the last 24 hours and the positivity rate accelerated to 24.3% of tests from 16.5% on Tuesday, according to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases. "

Then I urge the Government to obtain and make accessible the two plus million doses of Moderna instead of mixing, matching with the Sino, rationing and claiming to the media as if it is available when it isn't.  I think when the government honestly meet it's responsibility the people will step forward and get vaccinated.  Until that happens?  I suggest like before get your home in order and prepare for what is to come.????

We don't know if the vaccines will work against omicron but better to have than not at all. Also we know  that the people that have been infected before can be reinfected again according to S.A. doctors.

Nor me - until I read yesterday that it was present in UK days before the it was announced by the S. African guy who identified it.

My source was MSN UK news.

No reason to doubt it.

Reinfections are a big deal with Omicron

COVID-19 reinfection study from South Africa yields ominous data about Omicron

How the emergence of the Omicron variant will shape the COVID-19 pandemic is still unclear, but new data from South Africa are worrisome. A study published yesterday as a preprint suggests Omicron is causing more infections in people who have recovered from an earlier bout with the virus, one sign that the new variant is able to escape at least some of the immune system’s defenses. “This does not bode well for vaccine-induced immunity,” says virologist Florian Krammer at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai.

Folks are waiting for a decent vaccine.  the smart ones that a left unvaccinated don't want ass zeneca or Chinese surprise.  If the authorities want the country fully vaccinated the need to stop blocking the legitimate vaccines people want.

It is here already.

Of course is it.

It's just that Thailand doesn't have sufficiently robust, consistent, and sophisticated testing policy.

Something has to exist before it can be identified.

The chances of the virus only being in one person at the time of identification are a bit like the lottery, virtually certain it traveled elsewhere before identification.

Governments have a responsibility to prevent further importation and try and contain what infection is present, but that requires public co-operation.

No they don't and that's a stupid idea anyways. Maybe in March 2020 this made sense but in December 2021 it's totally retarded.

And so can those people who are fully vaxxed. About time people understood the Vaxxes protect most people against serious infection without the need for hospital treatment.

And that applies to those who have been infected and recovered. If they are otherwise healthy they have as much immunity as those who are Vaxxed.  It's those who are not vaxxed and have not been infected who are at risk.

Thailand has done more to test arrivals than most western countries, in the UK unless you came from a country already red you have been free to mix with the public immediately on arrival.

Sorry, I didn't get the memo that the pandemic had come to an end.

There are some indications Sinovac may protect better against Omicron, because it was a full inactivated virus. If I had to take a vaccine now, I'd personally take one with a mix of Sinovac and another one, probably Astra.
