carbuyer
For a Thai person to buy a car from a foreigner who is outside of the country, what documents are needed? I see something about "power of attorney documents", where can those be found? What else is needed? Thank you so much
carbuyer
PS. The car is 3 years old, if that matters
Popular Post OneMoreFarang
I can't tell you the details but I can tell you the following: Some time ago I bought a second hand big bike. When I received the bike I got the book and a bunch of signed documents. Then I had the bike for years and I never transferred it to my name. When I sold the bike a couple of years later I gave the buyer the bunch of documents which I received years ago. All fine, he didn't need anything else. 2
LosLobo
As far as I can remember it is nigh impossible unless the owner has a current long term visa and if the owner is not in country this is not possible. Expats should always have an emergency contingency plan for assets and bank funds. Sale of assets and bank funds can be difficult to repatriate after an emergency departure. What else is needed? It is not easy for anyone outside of the country to transfer assets, presumably so they don't get fleeced by their family while overseas. The seller will need to appoint a person to take on power of attorney to sign the vehicle documents transfer request on their behalf. Getting that verified as legitimate here can be troublesome. It will need to be notarized at sellers current location and a verified Thai translation provided. I would definitely suggest entering such a deal only on the basis that you actually hand over the funds when you have the blue book in your name in your hand, and not before. 3

You send them to the owner for them sign. They then send you the blue book if they are in possessionof the book. Also they need to send a copy of their passport with pix ID page. Also a copy of the page that is stamped when they left Thailand. Then your DLT office can sort out tranfer of ownership. 3

My experience is advice directly from the local DLT office. But I would suggest that LTO officers like TM officers sometimes use their own discretion in dispensing official policy. MikeyIdea
Just a comment from personal experience. Kwasaki is correct ???? Just two additional comments. The papers should be signed by the one owning the car according to the blue book. That may not be the one you buy it from. Quite common. Secondly, never ever buy without getting the book. It could be held by a loan shark and you do really not want to inherit that problem. Edited January 1, 2022 by MikeyIdea 1
kwonitoy
You can also get the transfer documents from the vehicle inspection agencies if you don't want to go to the DLT. They are a lot more of those around. I transferred ownership of my truck to my nanny when I left in October. Signed the transfer papers, copy of passport, blue book, done. If they are out of the country just scan the transfer papers and e-mail to them for signatures.
Ralf001
You can also get the transfer documents from this very forum. Second post down has them linked. https://aseannow.com/topic/1147974-power-of-attorney-to-sell-car/
