Thailand reports 8,158 new COVID-19 cases, 15 deaths, 3,942 recoveries

Thailand on Friday (January 14) reported 8,158 new COVID-19 cases, 3,942 recoveries and 15 additional deaths over the past 24 hours. 

 

▶︎ Infections outside prisons: 7,916. Prisons: 242

▶︎ Recoveries: 3,942

 

Friday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 2,308,615 with 21,898 deaths.

 

The news comes as the Centre for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) has expressed its concern over rising infections among Thai medical personnel and has urged them to receive a fourth dose of vaccine to boost protection.

 

CCSA Assistant Spokesperson Dr. Sumanee Wacharasint said that, in recent days, about 30 medics have been infected with COVID-19 each day adding, however, that while the numbers are low, the implications are of greater concern, because there will be a reducing number of medical personnel to take care of patients.

I believe the old iceberg comparison is apt. The numbers represent what you can see i.e. the top of the iceberg being reported cases. What you can't see being the underwater part of the iceberg is actual infection numbers. Interestingly those in care has increased by >4k from yesterday.

Reading article yesterday (can't find it) anyway was about the fact that when new cases are rising so quickly that the recording of them and notification to close contacts etc becomes almost not practical.

In Victoria (state if Oz) they just dumped few days back cases as can't keep up.

As result the numbers for that state were listed as 50k +.

Queensland went from zero to 20k in a blink..

Keep in mind these numbers are from country with small population (25mil)

Thai News Reports: 8,158 confirmed cases, 2,760 probable cases (ATK), and 15 deaths (0.95%). 242 cases were from abroad. Out of 74,795 patients , 42,004 are in hospital. There are 510 in a serious condition (-10) with 105 on ventilators (-5) #Thailand

Maybe its the Thai's that are the clever one's, have wised up - I have first hand knowledge of a Covid outbreak of a large group of people, nothing serious, just mild symptoms as the Omicron is known for - none of the effected people is reporting! stay low for a few days until the fever is down, go back to normal. Who is to blame them? Its a monumental hassle to be in the system - for what? Nobody gets paid time off. Its not more serious than a mild cold.

 

Its very clever to move on with life, and stop completely destroying the economy just for giggles.

Yes, OK.  They are not fully reporting.  But they are locking down the country again, cancelling Test&Go, placing alchohol restrictions on business, forcing many small businesses to close, etc. etc.  So if this is so smart why all the restrictions?  Yet another contradiction.

Wow, good drop from the 89 cases last reported. Very strange under the circumstances.

 

Health officials on Thursday (Jan 13) reported 37 new COVID-19 cases, 8 of which were found in Hua Hin.

Elsewhere in the province, 5 cases were found in Pranburi, 5 case in Sam Roi Yot, No-case in Kuiburi, 6 cases in Thap Sakae, 5 cases in Bang Saphan, 1-case in Bang Saphan Noi, and 3 cases in Mueang Prachuap Khiri Khan.

No new deaths were reported today.

A further 4 cases were found in people who had travelled to Hua Hin from overseas.

Impossible to know how this is going here with the lack of testing. Enough anecdotal evidence around that as opposed to previous waves most of us now know people who have been infected this time. Certainly where I live the ratio of people I know infected now is enormous compared to the delta wave, although as we know the majority of people are getting mild symptoms even though that can mean high temperature and shakes.

 

I guess the only true measure are the hospital admissions, ICU, ventilated cases and deaths that will give us a clearer picture. Here are those trends since 1st Jan although lag times are still in play of course. Official figures taken from the dashboard

 

Hospital Admissions. (does not include those admitted to field hospitals, hospitels, community care or home isolation)

1st Jan = 15,784

14th Jan = 42,004

ICU and Ventilated cases, general trend since 1st Jan still down.

Come on, that's hardly "locking down"!  To be fair to the government, the restrictions since before Christmas and since Omicron have been far more reasonable than many predicted.  I remember seeing many posts on this Forum suggesting we'd go back into a full lockdown situation again and that Christmas/New Year would be another Songkran 2021.

The impending Zombie Apocalypse does not seem to be materializing. I know many will be disappointed, especially the goons who have been using Covid as a cover, to stop the protest movement, which is likely to swell, once this is over. And the panic mongers.

 

But, perhaps it is time to embrace the onset of Omi, and call it the blessing it really is? Is normal life just around the corner?

One has to wonder if the Spanish Flu mutated the same way before it finally was declared over after 2 years...as it went through 3 waves as it traversed the globe.  I would say that Covid is on the same path.

Surprisingly it still stays low...Over the whole world cases are very high, only here in Thailand it seems that it is not so bad... and that while there is  a lower vaccination grade than in the western countries..

Bangkok Ready to Cope with New COVID-19 Wave

 

BMA spokesman Pongsakorn Kwanmuang said the City Hall already had readied about 10,000 beds to treat COVID-19 cases as it daily logged about 970 new caseloads that accounted for 1-2% of about 4,000 people undergoing mass testing every day.

 

The infection rate was lower than 10-12% detected during the four previous waves of COVID-19, he said.

Looking like boosters are the majority.  I sure hope they get those unvaccinated vaccinated soon. Picked up my Moderna booster today at a pharmacy here in Portland.  Just walked on in, wish it was that easy back home in Thailand.

I'm not surprised, low PCR testing, low proactive testing, not count ATK, possible incarceration for reporting a positive ATK. Chonburi today all walk-ins bar 40 from the world.

If these were the real numbers then everything should be open.

Sure I agree with you if this are the real numbers no need to have restrictions, extra hospital beds, and so on...Not a real danger yet... but that is what the public thinks too and that makes it very dangerous because why should you follow the rules if there are not so many cases?/ Real numbers would make people aware that it is/was serious....but again who am I

Agree, informing the population of true situation lets them know of the risk to themselves. As you say, under reporting leads to a false sense of security and people disregard the rules.

Are the deaths and hospitalisation figures being under-reported?  This is what would concern people.   Obviously, the infection numbers are massively higher as many people will understandably not be reporting their positive tests.  But as they are likely to be asymptomatic or with very minor symptoms, why does this matter?

It would be informative to all if the covid stats for both testing and infections rates per Province were reported by the government . I am surprised that the WHO has not got such requests . Or are we to assume that the reports concern the Bangkok areas ?

Thailand to declare Omicron ‘endemic’ this year as nation learns to live with virus

 

Disease Control Department chief Opas Karnkawinpong said the country was slightly ahead of the World Health Organisation and other countries regarding measures to deal with the new Omicron strain.

 

However, he added that Thailand did not disagree with the WHO’s warning that it is too soon to regard Omicron as an endemic rather than pandemic disease.

“We are simply launching a public awareness campaign on how to prepare and to live with Omicron as endemic disease,” Opas said.
