Hi all,

My wife will be arriving in the UK this coming Saturday.I will then start to collect the documents needed to apply for ILR in 2 years time. i would like some advice. My wife has not changed her sirname to my sirname . I am wondering about should i ask for all letters that i recieve , ie. gas bill, council tax bill etc , to be adressed to me and my wife , but what sir name should i use, her Thai sirname or my sirname ?

example- john jones and lek jones or john jones and lek wattana.

Thanks for any advice.

If your wife hasn't changed her surname to yours (neither has my wife) then when she needs ID she will have to show her passport (which is in her maiden name). So she will have to open bank accounts, credit cards etc in that name. However there is absolutely no problem doing that. She lives her life with that name.

Many married couples these days dont change their names on marriage. there have been absolutely no problems for us either when applying for visas for Thailand or visas for UK as the marriage certificate proves the link. (if it's in Thai you will need it translated into Enhglish).

As for your ILR get some letters addressed to you , some addressed to her and you can get some addressed to Mr A Scooty and Mrs B Thailady. They will all be to the same address so thats the proof.

Thanks for the replies.

My wife will be coming to UK on Saturday. at the moment i have had an offer to buy a house accepted. i am going to buy a house, i assume it would be a good idea not to bother having any mail in my wifes name sent to my current address and to wait untill we move into the new house and then start having mail sent in her name.?

It really doesn't matter, you are allowed to move house, it's the fact that you both have the same address for the same period that matters. However it's unlikely that she will start to get letters to her for a month or two and although they specify proof over the entire period of the two years, clearly the final 18months are more important than the first 6.

Hi

First thing to do is open a bank for her.

I added my wife to mine very simple & quick.

Then i open a Halifax Easycash account joint also. Very easy as they do not credit search her (no credit) obviously.

Council tax they dont care who the hel_l is on the bill.

As long as the bill match with her ID's & address's are joint with the hubby then your 99% there!

If you got any kids together or are going to then job done really. Not an excuse to have any but you can do plenty of practice :o

ok what you really need to do is go to the Borders & Immigation Agency website and download the application form for indefinite leave to remain (SET M). This will give you some idea of the process, and includes in section 9 , documents that they are looking for.

Hope this is of use and good luck

My advice also would be to start getting things put in your wife’s name straight away; something which I neglected to do, and which caused a few worries when the time suddenly came to apply. Also had that apparently common problem of when to actually apply-

http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/index.php?sh...p;hl=indefinite

The other silly mistake I made was to use the wrong application form. With a baby due around the same time we had to apply (April) it seemed a good idea to print the forms well in advance, to help us prepare. We knew about the new requirement from April for a Citizenship or ESOL pass, and as that was also mentioned on the paperwork I printed off, I assumed all was in order; unfortunately it failed to mention that the application form itself would also be replaced in April. Nor did it mention the massive price hike to over £700. Bit of a nasty surprise then when the application was returned without the coveted ILR, but they invited as to apply again, and despite all the worries we finally got the ILR a week ago. Just hope I’ll have time to be a bit more organised when SWMBO applies for citizenship…
