snoop1130
Thailand’s navy and pollution experts are rushing to clear up an oil spill in the Gulf of Thailand off the coast of the eastern province of Rayong today (Thursday), after an undersea pipeline leaked hundreds of thousands of crude oil late Tuesday. Containment efforts are expected to last 7-10 days until the leaked oil is dissolved by chemicals. The Pollution Control Department (PCD) has granted permission for the use of additional chemical dispersants in their continuing struggle to stop slicks of oil spilt, but its use must be under the department’s control. The PCD’s director-general, Attapol Charoenpansa, told Thai PBS today that the dispersants will be released onto the surface of the sea from an aircraft and estimated that it will take 7-10 days for the chemicals to dissolve the oil, as he assured that the public will be kept updated and there will be no cover-ups. Chemicals do not dissolve oil, they break it down into small particles which then take it down to the sea-bed and hide it from view, thus giving the impression it has been cleared up. Plenty of evidence of this practice after the "Deepwater Horizon" catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico 2

888huahin
I agree with Hotchilli's comments, just because you can't see it doesn't mean its gone away, plus the Oil Dispersants are just chemicals which cause more pollution and harm to wild life. The sunken tanker is only in shallow water 30m, the cargo is light oil (not crude), l worked in the Bay of Biscay recovering Crude Oil from a sunken super tanker called Erica, using Divers its possible to tap into the Cargo Tanks and pump in either Hot edible oil or Water to displace the Diesel, but all this takes planning and money. It's cheaper just to dance around the issue

The sunken tanker is a separate pollution threat but I agree the cargo is recoverable.
Partenavia
It is plain stupid to put estimates as to how long its going to take to clear it up, there are so many permutations, including the weather, together with the experience and equipment they have. Thunglom
Fishermen (and farmers) have been complaining about the pollution around Rayong for years. This is not the first oil spill to threaten places like Samet. And many minor "leak" or discharges go unreported or unnoticed. The "clean-up" is a misnomer too. Dispersants are pollutants in themselves - just because you can"t see the oil and the cleaning chemicals, doesn't mean they aren't still there. The land and sea around Rayong is polluted beyond belief.
