After a lengthy period of closures and uncertainty due to the ongoing pandemic, many expatriates in Vietnam are very happy that they could start to travel again.

They are hoping, though, that caution will still accompany the country's reopening moves.

One British businesswoman living in HCMC, said she was not worried about the virus because people around her were vaccinated, maintaining the habit of washing hands, wearing masks, and "being sensible about avoiding infection risks."

She had not wanted to travel very far, wanting to stay away from crowds because she was pregnant.

She did however feel relaxed at the beach in Can Gio, which is about fifty kilometers from HCMC downtown.

Meanwhile, a businessman said he did not wish a return of restrictions that heavily affected business in the past.

He also suggested that authorities should hurry up and open more flights and services for tourism.

This would facilitate family reunions after long separations as well as Vietnam's economic recovery, he said.

Personally, he wants to fly home and visit other places within Vietnam in the coming months.

"Those activities will give people more confidence that things will get better, and they can live without so many concerns," he said.

After seeing high travel demand during Tet, so expats were concerned that there might be another wave in Vietnam.

Some even said they would limit going out for the next few weeks, to be on the safe side.

Vietnam resuming activities

Everyone agreed with one issue, they all supported Vietnam resuming activities for economic benefit.

Tourists from other countries should be welcomed because tourism is a major source of national revenue, and foreign investors and skilled workers need to be allowed to enter Vietnam for business development, he said.

Most expats agreed that it had been really hard not being able to fly home or for their relatives to come here.

Many cannot wait to travel again after such a long time.

It would seem there may be light at the end of the tunnel.
