The number of my pals 'just working one more year' to make sure they had enough then died without ever having more than their yearly holidays is astounding.

I have never planned more than one year at a time here - the length of my extension of stay.

Twelve iterations of "just one more year". But I cannot imagine doing it without a reliable income.

Sounds like he has at least a modest amount of U.S. social security income, and good experience at how to stretch it.  So it's not a blind leap into the unknown, but rather an informed decision to accelerate by a few months something that he has planned to do for many years.  And (not to be morbid but rather just practical) it sounds like his mother is in a final spiral so there may be an upcoming inheritance in the mix.

 

I hope he resumes writing.

No argument from me, I was in a marriage with a very jealous wife. I now realize duty, fidelity and responsibility only work if it is mutual obligation.

Nowadays, I have discarded those concepts, and the only ethical constructs I stick to are fairness, and avoidance of hurting anybody.

Always love to see how Americans make retirement sound so extremely complicated as well boring. I remember reading some articles on Market Watch where a woman asked if she had enough money to retire in SE asia (she had over 1.5M net worth and a passive income of like 5000+ dollars). Came down to the fact she wasted the past 10 years working more, while not having had to do so.

If, after working one's butt off doing a job one doesn't like for 40 years, one is actually able to retire, one should be able to do whatever one wants to, even if that involves not doing anything important.

 

I do not accept that that applies to those that live off the proceeds of crime or those that exploit taxpayers all their ( non working ) life.

But why would a genius work for 40 years in a job which he doesn't like?

Or to say is differently: A genius wouldn't do that.
