Mental Health Dept Warns About Stress Due to Excessive News Consumption

BANGKOK (NNT) - The Department of Mental Health has indicated concern for people who constantly follow news and social media updates to the point of stressing themselves out, noting that this is particularly the case when many serious developments are taking place.

 

Dr Warot Chotipittayasunon, a spokesperson for the Department of Mental Health, recommends that people take in an appropriate amount of news and exercise moderation. He also suggested that people perform self-evaluations to determine whether news cycles are starting to affect their daily lives or cause stress and sleep problems.

 

Additionally, the spokesperson said people who find themselves constantly needing to stay informed on new developments may wish to focus on other activities to relax their minds.

 

Dr Warot explained that people suffering from Fear of Missing Out (FOMO) can have volatile emotions and experience anxiety when not online. They generally spend more than 6 hours looking at screens each day and obsessively use Facebook, Twitter and other information-related apps.

 

Dr Warot further noted that people exhibiting such symptoms may want to consult a psychiatrist.

Yep. Current tragic events and the doom and gloom of covid aside, the advent of the smartphone and being able to access the news and social media etc has certainly made for a more nervy populace. Things were just simpler when one couldn’t be contacted 24/7 or access all information—and associated trollish propaganda—in a nanosecond.

They won't consult a psychiatrist, they'll consult their beloved, tried and trusted Farcebook, which gave them the condition in the first place !

I don't get stressed out over news or much of anything on social media, but I do start to meltdown if I text someone and don't have a reply in like 10 seconds!

My wife gets stressed by trying to work out the winning lottery numbers in advance for about 40 hours a week and winning absolutely nothing - ever ! I would not mind so much if they made the tickets out of bog roll so they had some use after.

They could start with well founded news about Covid and it's rapidly decreasing health risk instead of throwing the increasing infection numbers.

And please: how many countries have TV news anchors/presenters wearing face masks?

Even sitting alone in front of the camera.

Why produce such fear?

Ridiculous. I was using a video link with a bank in Singapore once and the girl at the other end was wearing a mask - I asked her why? and requested she took it off. I do tend to lip-read subsconciously so the mask hinders communication - also she was quite pretty ????

So, how is it then that when you try talking to these people about current affairs, the vast majority of 'em don't have a clue as to what is happening/has happened around the world? What "news" are they focusing on then?
