Fire At The Jasmine Hotel, Walking Street

The Pattaya Police were informed by the Fire Department at around 2.15 am on 15th June about a fire at the Jasmine Hotel in Walking Street so quickly rushed to the scene.

On arrival the team found that the fire was burning in Room 403 on the 4th floor. A lot of smoke was coming out of the room. Fortunately, the fire alarm was working and tourists were running for their lives.

It took the firemen almost half an hour to control and put out the fire. At which point the police inspected the scene to find that the fire started from the air-conditioning unit which the guest had left switched on whilst he was out. Apparently the electric wires overheated and sparked flames onto furniture in the room.

The receptionist stated that the room guest, Mr. Alistair Lynch aged 46 from the UK had checked into the room since 4th June and had planned to check out on the 15th June. When the incident occurred Mr. Lynch was drinking at the Rolling Stone Beer Bar. He was very surprised when he returned to find all his belongings burnt and he stated that he had a lot of money kept in the room and now it was all destroyed.

He now has an appointment at the station for questioning since the damages is hundreds of thousands of Thai Baht, which hopefully will be covered by the hotel’s insurance.

Dear all,

I would just like to add a few lines to the reported fire at the Jasmine Hotel on the 05 - June – 2007. We the management of the Jasmine hotel would be very pleased to add a footnote, slight correction to your article with regards to the cause of the fire; As you know the hotel has just recently been totally refurbished, this included the electrical wiring and fire alarms to a very high standard. The Fire department and the Police department have both confirmed after investigation the cause of the incident, that luckily ended well for all involved. The cause of the fire was that the guest’s luggage was placed directly on top of the electrical hot plates in the room with the plates turned on prior to leaving the room. Of course the damage was quite extensive in the room but the hotel is mostly void of excessive fire hazardous material and each room is an individual unit. All the floors are tiled and there is a minimal amount of wood in the rooms. Our insurance company will refund all our costs and we have already refurbished the room to its former high standard.

The poor guest had to leave Thailand the next day and we presume and hope his insurance will cover his losses. This note might also serve as a small reminder that we all can make mistakes and that extra caution should be used when using hot plates as accidents do happen, we are after all just humans!

Last night of his holiday and a fire broke out under, shall we say, uncommon circumstances destroying a "large mount of money". Nine days in Pattaya and he still had money left, the bg's are getting lax or careless in their old age.

Convenient at the least, or do I smell a holiday insurance scam?

Or have I been reading ThaiVisa too long?

You and I both.

After reading the post from Jasmine Hotel, you gotta wonder. At the end of his holiday, (maybe) no money to pay his hotel bill, luggage packed and left on top of an electrical hot plate ? :o

(hmmm, must have been a smart man though, and kept his passport on him while he was out drinking).

It's been very humid - he wanted to dry his socks out before flying home.

Or did he read that article about the best way to cook a dolphin - take one large suitcase, a pinch of pepper, .....

And of course he was saving all his money to buy a small souvenir from King Power in Suvarnabhumi Airport - such as a new travel bag.

Well, the two stories above are quite different. Why the discrepency? Which one would you believe? Could Jasmine be posting here to save their reputation? Considering they've never posted before on ThaiVisa one must think what is there motive. I've stayed at the Jasmine hotel and apart from it being new and nice in appearance, it has many downfalls.

First it sits right behind Happy agogo therefore the noisy is bothersome until about 3am,, not good for earlybirds. The noise from the water pumps plague about 50% of the rooms 24 hours a day. Cats roam the hallways and cry out and fight each other. On a few days that I stayed there there was no water in the rooms and when it did come on it was black (could be a pattaya problem). The wifi internet is pretty spotty and is constantly dropping.

There are a few good things being that it is fairly cheap, has nice friendly staff, and the location is pretty good.

All in all, there are always 3 sides to a story:

one person's version the other person's version and the truth.
