Electric Vehicles in Thailand

Recommended Posts

ES even a better promo than EP.   NO promo for the ZS, but an all new low price.  Now 829k, which used to be the promo price, vs 869k and original MSRP  949k.

Another van option, better priced than Maxus 9 @ 2.49M

MG3 back, as a hybrid.  If having nice suspension, would be fun to zip around town in. 0-100 kph @ 8 secs.  Not a PHEV though.

I just read that Byd will introduce its new batteries by the end of the year. (Earlier, they mentioned September.) The new battery should guarantee greater autonomy and at least a 30% reduction in costs, according to reports.

I wouldn't think there are too many, if any, of those 599k baht ZSs left.  Best value out there if looking for small family SUV ... IM bias HO

Prices on the EV's are plummeting, just like the demand.

Best to check your facts before posting here as you will called out on any bs

Total vehicle sales  (ICE + EVs) in July was down 20.6% YOY

Here are 2023 EV registrations figures from Autolife

From February 1st 2023 to 31st July 2023 33.844 EV's were registered

From February 1st 2024 to 31st July 2024  29,758 EV's were registered

Overall EV's registrations for the period 2024 are down 4,086 compared to the same time period for 2023

https://autolifethailand.tv/total-ev-bev-register-2023-thailand/

https://autolifethailand.tv/ev-register-july-2024-thailand/

Data from the Department of Land Transport indicate that the EV market has not been particularly strong since the beginning of the year. January recorded the highest number of registrations for the year at 13,321 units, driven partly by a rush to register before the January 31 deadline to qualify for benefits under the EV promotion plan, EV 3.0, which offers a 2% excise tax and a subsidy of up to 150,000 baht.

https://www.nationthailand.com/blogs/business/automobile/40039276

totall number of ev sales for 2023 is in the region of 89,000

Vinny, please stop posting factually, correct but misleading information.

We all know that the market share of EV has increased every month for the last seven months and at the market share for ice vehicles has decreased every month for the last seven months.

So say it like it is, EV‘s are stealing an ever increasing market share from Legacy vehicles.

It can't be misleading information  when its factually corrrect

This article is also incorrect regarding growth figures as it states

With 41,000 EV registrations, Thailand’s plug-in market recorded growth of 5% in the first half of 2024. This followed a surge in deliveries during the same point last year, when 89,000 units hit the roads, up 327% year on year. However, the market could soon see electrification accelerate again.

ICE vehicles  before EV's had 100% market share so a single EV sold would mean ICE market in decline

Factually correct information can be misleading. Your stats would imply that people are turning away from them and choosing ICE when in fact the reverse is true.

I asked AI for an example of something factually correct that is misleading, and here's one you might find amusing

Headline: “Electric Vehicles (EVs) Have a Higher Carbon Footprint Than Gasoline Cars.”

This statement might be factually correct if it refers to the carbon footprint of manufacturing EVs, particularly the production of lithium-ion batteries. However, it can be misleading without additional context:

  1. Lifecycle Emissions: While the production of EVs might have a higher initial carbon footprint, their overall lifecycle emissions (including use and disposal) are typically much lower than gasoline cars due to zero tailpipe emissions.
  2. Energy Source: The carbon footprint of EVs can vary significantly depending on the energy source used to charge them. If the electricity comes from renewable sources, the overall emissions are much lower.
  3. Technological Advancements: Advances in battery technology and recycling methods are continually reducing the carbon footprint of EV production.
  4. Comparative Impact: The statement might not consider the environmental impact of extracting and refining fossil fuels for gasoline cars.

Without this context, readers might wrongly conclude that EVs are worse for the environment than gasoline cars, which isn’t the case when considering the full lifecycle and potential for renewable energy use.

Here's one of mine, your use of statistics whilst factually correct might lead one to believe you are intelligent, which is misleading because you're clearly as dumb as a bag of rocks.

Only joking Vinny!

Rubbish The stats provided by Autolife indicate that number of EV's registered in 2023 for the period of Febrary 1st 2023 to 31st July 2023 is more than the number of EV's registered  for the same period in 2024

There are many reasons why that is the case and those reasons have already been discussed

Since you are doing absolute numbers, EV sales are down YOY in 5 out of 8 months this year.

The FactCheck patrol call out BS.

Forget last year, we are living in this year.

Since & including February of this year, each subsequent month has recorded a higher percentage market share of EV's.

And conversely, since & including February of this year, each subsequent month has recorded a lower percentage market share of ICE cars.

So much so that now almost 1 in 6 new cars sold is an EV.

STOP trying to mislead people.  The EV revolution is here and it's happening now.

There has been factually  incorrect information posted recently today such as

"

EV sales on the other hand were up over 13% YOY"

Now I assume you understand the term "YOY" year over year

Now  if you look at Autolife figures that EV sales are up 13% YOY can't be supported by the figures provided by Autolife

That is fake and misleading on so many different level, apart from January, not a single month has reached 1 in 6 or 16.67%, even for RY.1 which is really the only vehicle category EVs selling in.

In other vehicle categories EVs are selling is very low numbers.

Hope our happy EV owners are ready for a massive bomb 💣 shell.

For those of us with a vehicle older than 7 years, we need to go for a vehicle inspection to check breakes, exhaust and lights to renew the annual road tax.

Guess what? Starting March 2025 battery 🔋 degradation is part of the vehicle inspection for EVs in China.

Most likely something similar will also be required in Thailand 🇹🇭

Got a reference/link for that?  Like what they mean by degradation.

I expect it would consist of basically a visual inspection around the traction battery.....looking for impact damage, damaged high voltage cables, etc.     I don't think battery "degradation" in terms of how much charge capacity (State of Health) is the type of degradation they would be looking for...as mentioned, probably visible  type damage.

And maybe "if" EVs sold in China have to meet include certain "standard/open source" OBD2 measurement parameters then maybe some type of basic OBD check would need to be done.  Kinda like how in certain countries/states vehicles have to pass certain Inspection & Maintenance (I/M) OBD tests (a.k.a., Smog or emissions test) which is looking at "emissions" every 1 or 2 years.   Those nasty emissions coming out the tailpipe.

Also, I saw a recent CNN news report on TV  talking about "local provincial/city governments" in China have been creating a bunch of new taxes on "this-and-that" since the central govt has been cutting back on funds provided from the central govt tax coffers.  So, some local governments are trying to make up for the tax funding shortfall.  The CNN report mentioned some of the new fees/taxes dealt with vehicles.  And with more and more EVs on the roads in China I expect EVs are a new target for tax revenue....make up for the decline in tax revenue on declining numbers of ICEVs.

I did some googling on the regarding "new energy" vehicle (which typically means EV and PHEV) annual inspection requirements in China starting Mar 2025.   Expect it will be OBD and visual.

You are on top of things Pib and you are most likely right.  Will be interesting when large numbers of EVs start turning 7 years old.

As you previously pointed out, the Ciaz discount became the new normal price and as Suzuki is bowing out of Thailand they can still find a few buyers.
