- Regular ICE cars saw a -4.3% drop in sales.

- Pick-up ICE's saw no change

- EV's saw an increase in 66.7% (which is actually reduction in the previously increasing rate / trend rate, nevertheless a 66.7% growth).

 

 

This also shows that EV's have a 5% market share, but have increased that market share from 0.1% in 2020 to 1.2% in 2022, 3% in 2024.....   this there remains growth as a percentage of the market...

I doubt the sources are perfect as they are rounded to the nearest 1000 - nevertheless the general indication is there.

We can 'both be generally right' which is the case here - the numbers vary because the sources vary....  fairly obvious I think.

You are wrong that EV sales were down... (as evidenced with two different sets of stats)

OK, +/- 40% is an acceptable error of margins in EV land, got it!

 

That also explain why EV owners are happy when the actual range is 40% lower than the promised range.

Next time my size 45 steel toe boots arrive in size 27, I will just practice a few days of footbinding and get on with it.

What is the source for your data? As it looks completely wrong showing no drop in pickup sales and an increase in EV sales.

 

Actually ExpatOilWorker is correct and BEV sales are down slightly in 2024.

From a different source (the most negative one I can find) it does show that while the whole industry car sales were down by 26%, EV car sales were down by 12%....  (not other sources contradict this and show an increase in car sales - such as the information I posted earlier).

 

In 2024, Thailand sold 76,000 EV's - this was ~12% of all vehicles sold in the country.

In 2024, Thailand sold 66,732 EV - this was ~12% of all vehicles sold in the country.

 

Thailand's Total car sales in 2024 were 572,675 units, down 26.2% from 2023. This was due to a number of factors, including high household debt, strict lending criteria, and weak consumer demand. 

 

 

As proportion of total car sales...  EV sales in Thailand have maintained the same percentage...

ALL car sales are down (for the reasons mentioned above) EV car sales have not reduced disproportionately than ICE's...   But, as mentoined that is the most negative set of stats I can find. 

 

All other stats I see show that there have been more more EV sales in 2024 than in 2023... But, there have been less ICE sales in 2024 than in 2023...   The whole market has taken a dump, but less so for EV's in Thailand.

I think one of the issues that keeps us arguing this is that the sources all have their own information, there is no central confirmed information its all different and contradicts - there is no central factual information database etc...    thus we can cherry pick which ever piece of data suits us.

 

I've attempted to be as un-bias as possible and find a range of information.

 

In summary - there are 3 conclusions to be made from the numbers I've observed, all of which slightly contradict each other: 

 

1) Car sales on a whole dropped between 2023 and 2024

2) EV Sales did not drop between 2023 and 2024

3) or EV Sales have dropped but only half as much as the whole car market.

100,000 EVs sold in 2023

  97,000 EVs sold in 2024  

 

 

The a total drop in total vehicle sales of 2024 of 26.2% from 2023...  EV sales were 'relatively un-impacted in comparison to ICE's.

 

Thus - the 'narative' that EV's sales are slowing, which when written earlier in the the thread implied a 'turn away from EV tech' is not holding water.... its a falsely pushed narrative....

Why is 'everyone' concerned about sales numbers ? - for the usual reasons...  A claim is made to support a narative, that narative that EV sales are dropping off, which seemed to imply that EV's are no longer popular, perhaps even a dying technology (I may have read between the lines too much), but the reality is all sales have dropped off... and EV sales have either not dropped off at all, or have not dropped of anywhere near as much as ICE sales have - depending on which stats are observed.

for 2024 total number of EV car registrations was 70,137 but for sales number we need to exclude January 2024 registration figires of 13,,653  which brings total down to 56,484 but we then add January 2025 EV car registration figures of 12,376 which include all EV car sales sold before 31st December 2024 which benefited  from the B100,000 susbidy which ended 31st December 2024 total number of EV  car sales in 2024 was 68,860

Once you have a shortlist check out the facebook groups 

For some brands spare parts seem to be an issue

For some brands there appears to be an issue with some dealers where they are stating they have no money to order spare sparts as they are waiting for outstanding payments from the importer for previous sales

Thanks, I was planning to walk the show again this year, but with all the posting on sales numbers and whatnot on here I thought someone might have some definitive numbers on what the best-selling brands and model are.

 

I have no interest in a niche brand. 

 

Also, my boy's about 6'4" so it needs to be roomy.

At the moment the BYD sealion seems to a very popular model if you can get one

Number of posters on the BYD facebook groups have posted they have cancelled their December 2024 reservations due to No delivery date after being advised delivery dates of between end of January / February 2025

The important statistic to know what's going on in the EV marketplace is % market share, you're not an idiot, you do know this.  Even without comparing this, you only have to open your eyes and see what's on the road.

 

The whole car industry is on its knees with Nissan probably going bust, Honda closing factories and Toyota leading a disinformation campaign.

 

Try looking at market share.  It's to early to look at pickup sales, we need to see what happens when BYD launch the Shark.  BYD has turned into another Toyota in Thailand and the Thai's love them.

I would get him to check out the BYD Dolphin and the MG4.  I don't know about the Dolphin but my friend Vernon has the MG4 and he's at least 6'4".
