Large Department Store Refuses to Give Free Bag

Featured Replies

  • Popular Post

Went to large department store in Pattaya to purchase 3 bottles of booze, totaling 8,000-9,000 baht. Paid for it and asked for a free bag to carry the purchase. Cashier refused and the manager refused, so I got a refund. The bag wasn't made of plastic. Went to a large grocery store, purchased the same bottles, recieved free bags, purchases were even double bagged.

The large department store probably lost 1,000 baht or more in profit over a bag, which probably cost them 2 or 3 baht, but they wanted me to buy for 4 baht. They also lost a customer for future booze purchases.

Is this smart marketing and customer relations by the large department store? Time for the department store to get new management? What are your thoughts?

What was the bag made of if not plastic? I remember when the ban on free plastic bags came into Ireland. It was mandatory to pay for them and the store couldn't give them free and absorb the cost

Why don't you bring your own bags and cut down on pollution, instead of boasting because you got "double bagged" elsewhere

Surprising that you made such a big fuss over a 4 baht bag , but in future you should take your own bags when going shopping

Normally I go out for the day, for a variety of activities, shop after dinner on the way home. I don't want carry around bags for 6 -10 hours. I walk and don't drive a motor vehicle. I don't go out to just shop. Any bag provided is reused. Plastic bags are used as household garbage bags.

You should write a letter to the shops owners and arrange a meeting with them and explain to the owners that they should change the management , sack the whole management team and employ a completely new management team , and the new management team shouldn't have rules that mean people have to pay 4 Baht for a bag .

Sack all the staff and all the managers and get a completely new set of staff in

I understand the OP's principle but really, spending 1000,s and worrying about 4 Baht for a bag? I also see it from a business owner's point of view and personally would have given bag/s for free. Problem is that cashier and manager are likely just following corporate rules from head office.

This customer exhibited eccentric behavior in demanding a free bag contrary to store policy.

The business should have been flexible in this case and was irrationally unable and or unwilling to be flexible.

If the clerk wasn't empowered to do so a manager should have been even if it meant reaching into his own pocket.

The customer was not demanding the store change its policy in general.

Just for him.

Just that time which was a large purchase.

I blame the store.

I think you're a really sad, petty little man, so sad and petty you took the time to write out a forum post about the whole sorry little affair.

So you think that rich people who spend a lot of money should get free plastic bags and poor people who don't spend  much money should have to pay for their bag ?

Rich People who spend 9000 Baht on a bottle of Whisky get a free bag and poor people who spend 49 Baht on a bottle of Chang should pay four Baht for a plastic bag ?

Must had been quality booze since he could buy the same in a random grocery store!

OP spends 9000 baht on purchase, but won't pay 4 baht for a bag.. that's like 13 cents....

Meanwhile, I love how 7/11 cashiers always scan and charge the 2 baht per bag, only for it to dissappear at the end..maybe becomes free after 100 baht purchase?

You did make the suggestion that purchases of goods where alot of money is spent should receive free plastic bags , its stands to reason that people who spend alot of money are richer than those who don't spend that amount of money . So people who spend a lot of money should get free plastic bags and those who dont spend alot of money would need to pay for bags

I bet if you were behind him in the checkout queue while the manager was called and the refund processed, you would be 'behind' his :expletive-ridden: principle

I would have paid it for him. Or tried. It would be hilarious if the store wouldn't allow it.
