Nong Han police in Udon Thani in Thailand's north east went to an accident in the rain on the Udon - Sakhon Nakhon Road yesterday afternoon.

A bank van carrying cash had been trying to overtake a pick-up on the bridge over the creek of Huay Nang Ngam. The driver lost control after going into a pothole and hit another pick-up then collided with the bridge wall.

A bank employee called Sakol Suthowa who was a passenger in the van was dead at the scene.

Driver Pongphitak, 39, said he was going from Sakon Nakhon to Udon and it had been raining the whole way.

The other pick-up was carrying five family members back from Sakon Nakhon. They were all only slightly injured.

Siam Rath reporting on the story mentioned that both vehicles that collided had licence plates ending in 63, a lottery omen according to the media.

They also reported that the bank - not named - sent another vehicle to offload the cash from the stricken one on its side, though the quantity of the money was unknown.

That overtaking on such a bridge is forbidden is probably not worth mentioning?

Particularly as it appears the money van was trying to pass on the left side.

I've been on that road many times. I'm not aware of any restrictions regarding overtaking on bridges. It's all all dual carriageway you would hardly notice these smaller bridges.

And yes the money van was overtaking on the left, so presumably the other pick up was hogging the outer lane. Or possibly money van was trying to squeeze through on the extreme left and hit the bridge.

Yet again, pick ups speeding in the rain and coming to grief.
