Seventy percent of Americans think enacting new gun control laws should take precedence over protecting ownership rights, according to an ABC News/Ipsos poll out Sunday.

Why it matters: The findings indicate widespread support for stricter gun control laws in the wake of mass shootings in Buffalo, New York, Uvalde, Texas, and Tulsa, Oklahoma.

The big picture: On the flip side, 29% of respondents believe protecting the right to own a wide variety of guns should be a higher priority than enacting new gun control laws, the poll suggests.

This ABC News/Ipsos poll was conducted June 3-4 by Ipsos using the probability-based KnowledgePanel®. The poll is based on a nationally representative probability sample of 542 adults age 18 or older. The margin of sampling error is ±4.8 percentage points at the 95% confidence level, for results based on the entire sample of adults.

500 people polled? Out of 330mil?

I wonder........

Of the 70% who would prioritize new gun controls over gun ownership rights........... how many of them are existing gun owners........... and what would their answer be if the new gun laws required them to give up their own  guns?

See, oftentimes, questions like these that get asked right after emotionally charged events.......... wind up getting very different answers than they would ordinarily get.

And one of the main differences revolves around the belief that the new changes/restrictions/controls being proposed............. will only apply to other people, and not to them!

See, it's axiomatic that when you  ask people if they are okay with the idea of giving up certain Rights..............they are fine with it........ as long as it's someone else's Rights that are being taken away, and not their own!

So it seems important to know how many of the people polled already own guns............ and whether they were asked what their answer would be............ if the new regulations/laws required them  to give up their own.

Remember..........

What people are willing to say........

And what people are willing to do.....

Can sometimes be remarkably different!

Cheers!

It is a rather small sampling, and I'd only hope that if very many more had been polled, the number would have risen to 75 or 80%. That would indicate the country is ready to turn in a better and more sane direction.
