Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha has told officials to clamp down on entertainment venues that are flouting the midnight closing rule, a government spokeswoman said on Sunday.

Deputy government spokeswoman Traisulee Traisoranakul said Prayut had received complaints via several channels of nighttime entertainment venues violating closing time rules.

Pubs, bars, karaoke shops and massage parlours were allowed to reopen in 31 Blue and Green zone provinces from June 1.  That includes Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan provinces.

The venues are allowed to operate until midnight, but many are staying open longer, leading to fear among local residents that they will trigger Covid clusters, the spokeswoman quoted Prayut as saying.

Traisulee said Prayut has ordered the Royal Thai Police to work with provincial and local administration officials to tighten enforcement of closing hours.

She said Prayut had also ordered agencies to ensure their officials do not turn a blind eye to violations. Those who are found to be helping venues stay open illegally will be subject to both disciplinary and criminal action, the spokeswoman added.

She called on members of the public to inform officials if they encounter any entertainment place violating the closing hour rule.

Meanwhile, the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration will meet next week to consider removing the face mask mandate in public places and allow entertainment venues to close at 2 AM.

Pathetic, controlling measures from this sad, controlling government, and the sooner they go the better.

Nearly every other country has moved on, and is getting back to normal. except Thailand !

In days gone by bars closed round 4am not a problem.By 3am they were quiet anyway.Bar girls happy bar happy and customer happy in they hotel.I saw no problems when that happened.even police thought it was ok as well I imagine.Closing at midnight only  set up the st stalls to 5 in the morning where people go after now.

If the pm realise that this brought tourist by the many restore it to 2am would be a step foward for bkk and other big cities. The areas are mainly tourist  and people who work in the business so where is the problem

What an absurd statement. I am currently in Canada and the idea that I am living in anything even close to a dictatorship is laughable. Virtually all COVID restrictions in Canada, including those actually under the control of the federal government have been lifted by the way, in case you hadn't heard.

You avoided the closing time issue.

"Prayut had received complaints via several channels"
From who? Who would complain, other than those trying to sleep or work after midnight in those zones... and let's face it these places were noisy before covid anyway.

Follow the science. It's clear the virus goes to bed at midnight. How could these venues be so careless.

The entertainment sector wanted to extend the opening hours... nothing to do with what the government is doing.

The people complaining , are I would suggest ,  the Bar owners who are complying with the midnight closing.

Oh Dear.

2 years on and still spreading fear regarding alcohol and C-19.

He is nuttier than a jar of crunchy peanut butter.

Sadly those in the queue are of similar cloth.

Normality is back Mr PM, get on with it then.

Cha-Cha needs to get out to the villages more often. Many locals "got over" C-19 ages ago and now comfortably live with it (runny nose,) and without muzzles.

What is this BS about opening hours anyway?

Open it or close it.

Make a choice!!!

Even in N. Korea, the bars and entertainment places close well after midnight and Thailand suppose to be a tourists destination country and plan to attract 10's of millions of tourists a year, to go to sleep at midnight?...

If memory serves, the only major covid cluster from night entertainment venue was the Krystal Klub Thong Lor debacle, and that involved government MPs and cabinet ministers...

Ain't that right Mr. Prayut?

LOL.....You have to ask yourself if this "spokeswoman" is actually aware of where she is living.

The majority of bars flouting the law are owned by..............yes.......old plod, and local officials. The rest pay a nice little bung to the remainder of the old plod that do not yet own their own venues.....

But, this brilliant PM knows very well that the virus only comes out after midnight, rather like Cinderella in reverse.
