Rishi Sunak smiling as he walks down a street

Rishi Sunak has said he would put the UK on a "crisis footing" on day one as PM, as he and Liz Truss continue their pitch to lead the Conservative Party.

In an interview with the Times, the former chancellor said the country faced a national emergency, including on the economy, the NHS and migration.

He will set out plans to tackle the NHS backlog when he gives a speech later.

Meanwhile, Ms Truss has announced plans for a "bonfire" of EU laws retained after Brexit.

She has promised to scrap or replace all such laws which she argues hinder growth by the end of 2023.

In 2 years with those policies the Tories will be pushed to the sidelines

Only in the land of labour make believe will the Tories be pushed to the sidelines. The voters are not stupid enough to go for Labour again.

Seems like he understands the plight of the UK economy only too well compared with the fairytale economics that Lis Truss, pushed by her backers in the ERG group and some others, are attempting to get the country into.  In 2 years with those policies the Tories will be pushed to the sidelines yet those members of the ERG group will be smiling with countless additional millions of tax free investments that she has afforded them together with minimal taxation on the meagre amounts that they actually declare in the UK.

Fairytale Economonics? Is this the new "Unicorn" that you lefties were spouing on about for 4 years? You lefty Remainers love a childish expression to repeat ad nauseam, don't you...

Truss promising a bonfire of EU laws. Now she's talking my language. Although a controlled explosion might be a better metaphor, starting with taking  completely legal, unilateral action on article 16.

Boom.

Two points:

1) a fat lot of notice "the blob" will take of that; half of them are still "working from home"!

2) if you declare a crisis, at some stage have to declare the crisis is over - which may be politically fraught!

Boom.

Invoking Article 16 may not be illegal - justified is another matter - but it is a temporary measure. It does not negate the wider Treaty. That can only be done with the agreement of both sides.

Seems like that explosion might be a damp squib.

Yep, all of which your government presided over…but don’t worry sunak, you won’t be responsible for turning an emergency into a catastrophe- the base of the tory party will follow their more base instincts by voting in truss and her tax plans will do that.
